On March 30, at the headquarters of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi co-chaired the 5th Political Consultation between the Vietnamese and Italian Foreign Ministries to discuss the cooperation situation and directions for promoting the Vietnam-Italy Strategic Partnership in the coming time.
At the Political Consultation, in a friendly and open atmosphere, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Deputy Minister Maria Tripodi assessed that the Vietnam-Italy Strategic Partnership has achieved strong developments in all areas in recent times; expressed their delight that the two sides conducted the Political Consultation on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of establishing the Strategic Partnership framework.
The two Deputy Ministers highly appreciated the outstanding results in bilateral economic cooperation with the two countries becoming important trade partners in the region. Currently, two-way trade in 2022 reached more than 6.2 billion USD, an increase of 11% compared to 2021, thanks to the positive impacts of the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to developing and wishes to deepen the “Strategic Partnership” with Italy, a member state with an important role in the EU; suggested that the two sides increase delegation exchanges at all levels and high levels; effectively maintain bilateral cooperation mechanisms in diplomacy, defense, economy, science and technology; and coordinate to implement meaningful activities on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of establishing the Strategic Partnership in 2023.
Sharing about the prospects for socio-economic recovery and the rich potential in the relationship between the two countries, the two sides agreed to coordinate to effectively implement the EVFTA, in which they strive to soon achieve the two-way trade target of 7 billion USD as agreed by the two Prime Ministers in their meeting in December 2022.
Vietnam asked Italy to soon ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the European Commission to soon remove the IUU yellow card on Vietnam's seafood exports.
On this occasion, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang thanked the Government and people of Italy for promptly supporting Vietnam with important vaccine sources, contributing to Vietnam's success in preventing and combating the Covid-19 epidemic.

Affirming the importance of promoting relations with the Indo-Pacific region and ASEAN, including the Strategic Partnership with Vietnam, which is also a partner with good friendship relations as well as Italy's largest trade partner in ASEAN, Deputy Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi affirmed that the Italian Government supports the early completion of internal procedures to approve the EVIPA Agreement and encourages Italian businesses to increase investment in Vietnam in areas of potential for both sides; hopes that the two sides will soon organize a Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation in 2023; continue to support development credit for Vietnam in the fields of water resources management and sustainable regional development.
Deputy Minister Maria Tripodi highly appreciated Vietnam's strong commitments at COP26 and affirmed that, as one of the world's leading countries in responding to climate change and implementing Paris commitments, Italy is ready to share experiences and support Vietnam within the framework of the "Just Energy Transition Partnership" (JETP).
At the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Deputy Minister Maria Tripodi discussed measures to promote cooperation between the two countries in the fields of security-defense, science-technology, culture-education, tourism... Accordingly, the two sides agreed to continue to effectively implement the Joint Committee on Science-Technology Cooperation, Defense Policy Dialogue; soon approve the Cultural Cooperation Program for the period 2023 - 2025 and strengthen cooperation in heritage preservation and people-to-people exchange; soon approve the Action Program on Educational Cooperation for the period 2023 - 2025 and student exchange activities, cooperation between universities of the two countries...
The two sides agreed to continue to coordinate closely at multilateral forums, especially at United Nations organizations; and to enhance consultation and cooperation within the framework of ASEAN and Italy.
Discussing the situation and sharing views on international and regional issues of mutual concern, the two sides emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and security, including maritime security, supporting the settlement of disputes by peaceful means, and complying with international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
During the visit, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang had a working session with the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy and agencies affiliated to the Embassy and Vietnam News Agency.
