Vietnam won a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics

Le Kien Thanh ranked 12th, bringing home the only gold medal for Vietnam at the 2025 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Bolivia.

On August 2, the University of Technology - the unit assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to train the Informatics Olympic team, announced the above news.

Le Kien Thanh, a 12th grader at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Gia Lai Province (formerly Binh Dinh), won the gold medal with 481.87 points. The male student ranked 12th out of 334 contestants from 90 countries and territories.

In early April, the male student led the selection round for the Asia- Pacific Informatics Olympiad team, then won a silver medal. Before that, Thanh won many first and second prizes since grade 10, achieving 8.0 IELTS.

The IOI 2025 results were announced after two exam days on July 30 and August 1. Each exam day lasted 5 hours with three programming tasks.

The remaining three contestants of the Vietnamese team all won prizes, placing in the top 100. The silver medal went to Dang Huy Hau, a 10th grader at Thang Long High School for the Gifted, Lam Dong Province, ranked 54th; Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, an 11th grader at the School of Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University), ranked 79th. Ninh Quang Thang, a 12th grader at Ha Long High School for the Gifted, Quang Ninh Province, received a bronze medal, ranked 89th.

The rankings of the delegations have not been announced. Last year, Vietnam's IOI team entered the top 4 with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

The International Olympiad in Informatics for high school students was first held in 1989 in Bulgaria. Vietnam participated in the first year. In total, the Vietnamese team won 22 gold medals, 53 silver and 55 bronze. The team's best result was in 1999 with three golds and one silver.

IOI 2025 will take place in Bolivia from July 27 to August 3. Four members of the Vietnamese team were selected from the national excellent student competition. During June and early July, they will be trained under the guidance of lecturers and former students who participated in the international Olympiad of the University of Technology.
