The Ministry of Science and Technology has just officially launched the Vietnam Science and Technology Exchange at https://techmartvietnam.vn, opening a national-scale online trading channel, connecting researchers, businesses and the market.
The Vietnam Science and Technology Exchange is developed as a specialized digital platform for selling, searching and connecting domestic technology. This is considered a concrete step in forming a transparent and modern technology market, where intellectual products can be clearly priced, traded and commercialized.
In the initial stage, the platform has integrated information from more than 600 technologies for sale, 50 technology purchase needs and 150 consultants and brokers. Organizations, businesses and individuals can set up digital booths to introduce technologies and equipment in many forms: technical descriptions, illustrative videos , transfer documents... This is also a channel to access specialized support services such as financial consulting, intellectual property and technology transfer.
The exchange's operating model is based on public-private partnership: the State invests in digital infrastructure platforms, databases and issues policies to support businesses in buying and selling technology; meanwhile, the private sector and intermediary organizations play the role of operating, brokering, providing content and related services.
Phase 2 of the exchange is expected to deploy a series of advanced features, including an online interaction tool between supply and demand, a real-time transaction statistics system, integrated legal advice and technology valuation. At the same time, data on the exchange will be linked to the national science, technology and innovation database system, forming a complete ecosystem between research and application.
The technology exchange model has been adopted by developed countries since the 1990s, including the US, Europe and especially China. One of the typical examples is the Shanghai Technology Exchange (STEX), established in 1993. From a small-scale brokerage center, STEX has become an important institution in the city's innovation ecosystem, recording more than 4,000 technology transactions with a total value of nearly 60 billion USD by 2023.
International models show that technology exchanges are not only a connecting tool, but also integrate a series of important services such as intellectual property valuation, legal advice, quality assessment and financial support. The formation of such exchanges helps technology truly become a special kind of commodity – measurable, ownable, transferable and recognized by the market.
In Vietnam, the foundation for developing technology trading has been in place for more than a decade through a system of 22 provincial technology information portals, national-scale networking events such as Techmart, Techconnect and Innovation, Techfest, etc. These activities play a role in laying the foundation and accumulating data for a national trading floor model.
The establishment of the Vietnam Science and Technology Exchange marks an important step in realizing the goal of transforming the economic growth model from breadth to depth, enhancing domestic innovation capacity. In the context of businesses increasingly needing to innovate technology, improve productivity and escape the “low value-added trap”, this platform promises to be an important link between research - production - market.
