MG's brand director also hinted that the new MG4 could be one of the first cars to feature standard semi-solid-state batteries.

MG has officially introduced an upgraded version of the MG4 electric car for the Chinese market. According to the plan, the car will be available for deposit in the domestic market in August and will start selling from September 5. The price of the car has not been announced yet.

The updated hatchback is part of SAIC's strategy to expand its electrification line-up, with the MG4 having seen weak sales in China but strong reception in the UK and Europe.

Continuing to use the Nebula chassis platform of parent corporation SAIC, the new MG4 has larger dimensions than the previous version. Accordingly, the car has dimensions of length x width x height of 4,395 x 1,842 x 1,551 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

Not only has the MG4 2026 grown in size, it has also been upgraded in terms of design. On the outside, the car has been equipped with a closed grille, arrow-shaped taillights, connected by an LED strip across the trunk door.

The traditional door handles, 17-inch alloy wheels and charging port located behind the left front fender are still retained on the car. Similar to the exterior, the interior of the MG4 2026 is also upgraded with a central control system developed with Chinese phone company Oppo.

The infotainment screen supports smartphone connectivity, voice and gesture control, and is compatible with Oppo, Huawei and Apple devices. This system eliminates the need to install or update apps directly in the car.

The "heart" of the MG4 is a permanent magnet electric motor located at the rear, with a maximum capacity of 163 horsepower, combined with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack provided by Rept Battery Energy. The car's maximum speed is 160 km/h, but MG has not announced the battery capacity and specific operating range.

MG brand manager Chen Cui has hinted that the new MG4 could be one of the first cars to feature a standard semi-solid-state battery. As mentioned above, the MG4 has been a lukewarm seller in China, with sales reaching just 13 units by February 2025. However, the model has been very successful in the international market.
11-7709.jpg
In the first quarter of 2025, MG Europe sold 78,505 new cars, up 33.5% year-on-year. The MG4 was one of the main drivers of growth. In the UK market, MG sold 24,641 cars in the first quarter of 2025, up 6.5% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the MG4 has sold more than 40,000 cars in the UK since its launch.
10-7345.jpg
MG plans to launch 13 new electrified models globally over the next two years, with an investment of around 100 billion yuan ($14 billion). The MG4 will continue to be the mainstay of this expansion strategy, especially in markets such as Europe, India and Southeast Asia, where small electric cars are increasingly popular.

MG4 is also currently being officially distributed in Vietnam for 948 million VND. Although MG does not announce sales figures, it is not difficult to see that this car model is not popular in Vietnam because of its high price and lack of public charging infrastructure.
