Vietnam and the EFTA bloc accelerate negotiations.

The 19th round of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the EFTA bloc (including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) is currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, with very positive signals, demonstrating the strong political determination of both sides to finalize the agreement as soon as possible.

According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Geneva, during the bilateral meeting with Switzerland on February 25, the two sides discussed the remaining key issues. Representing Switzerland was Ms. Helene Budliger Artieda, State Secretary and Head of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, Head of the Government Negotiation Team on International Economic and Trade Affairs, and included representatives from the Multilateral Trade Policy Department, the Office of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on International Economic Integration, and the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva.

The heads of delegations from both countries noted significant progress in all key areas such as trade in goods, services and investment, intellectual property, sustainable development and government procurement. To accelerate progress, both sides agreed not to introduce new issues into the negotiations, focusing instead on flexibly resolving outstanding issues. The EFTA side highly appreciated Vietnam's efforts and proposals for market opening, while reaffirming the bloc's traditional strengths in promoting private investment and technology transfer.

Currently, technical teams from Vietnam and EFTA are working to accelerate the legal review and finalize the last steps, aiming to complete negotiations and hopefully sign the agreement at the EFTA Ministerial Meeting in Iceland next June.

Upon signing, the FTA between Vietnam and EFTA is expected to create a major boost, further expanding the scope of trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and leading European economies , contributing positively to supply chains and overall sustainable growth.
