According to data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in October 2023, the United States imported 76,369 tons of shrimp, a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2022, marking four consecutive months of shrimp import growth after 13 months of decline.

However, import value reached only $609.7 million, 4% lower than in October 2022. This was due to a drop in shrimp prices to $7.98/kg, 12% lower than the same period last year ($9.08/kg).
In the first 10 months of 2023, the United States imported 651,907 tons of shrimp, valued at $5.4 billion, a decrease of 9% in volume and 20% in value compared to the same period last year ($715,638 tons and $6.7 billion).
India continued to be the primary supplier of US shrimp in October 2023, with 29,860 tons exported, valued at $225.8 million, a 9% increase in volume but a 5% decrease in value compared to the same period last year. The average price decreased by 13% to $7.56/kg.
Accordingly, India holds 39% of the shrimp market share in the United States. In the first 10 months of the year, India exported 245,165 tons of shrimp to the United States, valued at $1.9 billion, a decrease of 5% in volume and 19% in value compared to the same period last year.
Ecuador holds 24% of the shrimp market share, ranking second among the top shrimp suppliers to the United States.
Indonesia maintained its position as the third-largest supplier of shrimp to the United States, exporting 13,009 tons of shrimp, valued at $99.5 million, in October 2023; a 1% increase in volume and a 15% decrease in value compared to the same period last year.
The average price reached US$7.65/kg, 15% lower than the US$9.00/kg price in October 2022. Overall, in the first 10 months of the year, Indonesia exported 120,077 tons of shrimp to the US, earning US$971.9 million, a decrease of 15% in volume and 28% in value compared to the same period last year.
In October 2023, Vietnam remained the fourth largest supplier of shrimp to the United States, with 6,755 tons cleared, valued at $71.3 million, representing a 30% increase in volume and a 17% increase in value compared to the same period the previous year.
The average export price reached $10.57/kg, a decrease of 10%. Overall, in the first 10 months of the year, the United States imported 50,635 tons of Vietnamese shrimp, worth $541.2 million, a decrease of 17% in volume and 24% in value compared to the same period last year.
Recent trends in shrimp imports to the US market have been somewhat affected as the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) investigate four US shrimp suppliers (India, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Vietnam) for allegations of illegal anti-dumping duties and/or subsidies.
