This morning (March 18), the stock market suddenly plunged. The market was quite volatile but selling pressure increased after half of the morning session, pushing a series of stocks down, hitting the floor. After 11 o'clock, the VN-Index evaporated more than 40 points, equivalent to a decrease of 3%, down to 1,264 points. The Hanoi Stock Exchange also suffered a similar fate when the HNX-Index lost more than 2.5% to 232 points. At the end of the morning session, the VN-Index fell 35.91 points to 1,227.87 points and the HNX-Index lost 5.63 points to 233.91 points.
Stocks suddenly plummeted and VN-Index fell more than 40 points at one point.
All 30 stocks in the VN30 basket were in red. SSI plummeted more than 4.5%, FPT fell 3.1%, MWG fell 3.27%, SAB lost nearly 2% and a series of banking stocks such as CTG, BID, MBB, TCB... all fell sharply. The number of stocks falling in price was overwhelming on the HOSE floor with 461 codes, of which 12 codes were at the floor such as DGW, VRC, FTS, AGR... On the contrary, the HOSE floor recorded 38 stocks increasing in price. Notably, real estate stocks accounted for the majority of the codes traded in green such as CEO, BVL, DIG, DXG...
Market liquidity increased dramatically as money continued to pour into buying stocks. In the morning alone, the entire market had nearly 1.2 billion shares and fund certificates traded with a total value of more than VND30,143 billion. This transaction value increased by more than 10% compared to the entire trading session last weekend.
The sharp decline was quite surprising despite warnings from securities companies that investors should be cautious and avoid chasing stocks when many stocks have increased in price too high. However, there are also many opinions that factors supporting the medium and long-term uptrend are still present, such as interest rates being maintained at low levels to support economic recovery. Moreover, in the short term, the shareholders' meeting season is also approaching, with business plans as well as information on dividend payments and capital increase stories being revealed... which will be new driving forces to help the market trade more actively...
