Five patients infected with a rare strain of the Ebola virus have recovered.

During a visit to the city of Bunia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the epicenter of the current outbreak, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated: Five patients infected with the rare Ebola virus strain have recovered. Four will be discharged on June 1st, and one was discharged two days ago.

"Of course, we are still continuing our research on vaccines and treatments, but that doesn't mean that patients can't recover after contracting Ebola," added Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Previously, the WHO announced that a patient infected with the Bundibugyo virus had recovered. This was the first confirmed case of recovery in this outbreak. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo virus.

According to the WHO, as of May 29, health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda had recorded 134 confirmed cases of Ebola, including 18 deaths.

Supply shortages, loss of trust, and security instability are hindering efforts to combat the pandemic.

The organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) says the Ebola virus is still spreading faster than the response, despite better-organized health facilities and the arrival of new aid shipments.

In a statement on May 31, MSF called for the immediate expansion of testing, the acceleration of aid deployment, and the assurance of a continuous supply of medical supplies to affected areas.

Efforts to control the epidemic also faced many obstacles due to the lack of trust among local people in the disease prevention measures.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Ebola treatment center in Bunia, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the importance of mobilizing community participation in the fight against the epidemic.

If patients seek medical attention as soon as symptoms appear, they can receive the necessary support and have a better chance of recovery. Therefore, it is crucial to proactively report symptoms early and access timely medical care.

"We can stop the Ebola outbreak, and those who contract the disease can recover. But it's crucial that everyone understands that this is a responsibility of the entire society; every citizen needs to participate in the fight against the epidemic," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized.

Besides health challenges, the unstable security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is also significantly hindering efforts to respond to the epidemic.

Nevertheless, health experts remain optimistic about the possibility of controlling the outbreak.

“The final message we want to send to the Ituri community is that there is still hope. With current symptomatic treatments, we are seeing many patients recover,” said Pierre Akilimali, head of emergency response at the National Institute of Public Health, at the inauguration of the new Ebola treatment center.
