Amid concerns about extreme heat during the FIFA World Cup 2026, authorities in Monterrey, northern Mexico, have announced a large-scale deployment of free drinking water stations for fans to mitigate the risk of heatstroke.
According to a report by the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Mexico, citing an announcement from the Monterrey World Cup organizing committee, public water stations will be set up in the area around the Estadio BBVA stadium, pedestrian streets for fans, parks, and other crowded areas throughout the World Cup.
Officials in Monterrey consider ensuring free drinking water a top priority in the organization of the event, given that temperatures in this northern Mexican industrial city frequently exceed 38 degrees Celsius in the summer, and at times even approach 40 degrees Celsius.
Local health authorities warn that extreme weather conditions could put international tourists, especially those unfamiliar with the hot, dry climate of northern Mexico, at risk of dehydration and exhaustion if they travel or spend extended periods outdoors.
In addition to expanding the free water supply network, the city will also set up more shaded areas, mobile medical support points, and rapid response teams in crowded cheering areas.
The organizers also advised fans to bring their own water bottles, use sunscreen and sunglasses, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day.
One area of particular concern is the Estadio BBVA stadium, where the distinctive steel structure could cause significant heat buildup in the afternoon. Spectators in the East Stand are expected to be directly exposed to sunlight for several consecutive hours.
Despite facing significant climate challenges, Monterrey is still expected to be a prominent destination for the 2026 World Cup thanks to its modern infrastructure, passionate football atmosphere, and fan activities stretching from Fundidora Park to the approximately 8-kilometer-long pedestrian street connecting the city center to the stadium.
According to the FIFA World Cup 2026 schedule, the city of Monterrey will host a total of four matches at the Estadio BBVA, including three group stage matches and one Round of 32 match.
In particular, the Tunisia vs. Japan match on June 20th attracted international media attention as it could become the 1,000th match in the history of the World Cup.
Mexico will not host matches from the round of 16 onwards. All further knockout matches, such as the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final, will take place primarily in cities across the United States.
