The Norwegian team was based at the M Social Hotel, just 400 metres from the scene of the shooting. Auckland police were dispatched to the scene as soon as the incident occurred. The sound of a police helicopter woke the Norwegian players.
" Everyone woke up to the helicopter hovering outside the hotel windows and a large number of ambulances arriving, " said Norway captain Maren Mjelde.
" At first we didn't know what was happening. TV and local media were keeping us updated. We felt safe throughout the incident. FIFA has a good security system at the hotel and the team also has its own security personnel ."
Police cordoned off the scene of the shooting.
The shooting happened early in the morning in Auckland. Police confirmed that three people were killed, including the gunman. The gunman had been convicted of wounding with intent and assaulting a woman in March and was under house arrest.
New Zealand players remained calm in the face of the incident and prepared normally for the opening match of the 2023 World Cup this afternoon.
Football New Zealand said: " We are shocked by the incident in Auckland City Centre. We can confirm that the team are safe and are not making any further comment while further details are being provided. Please refer to the police. Preparations for the match are still underway ."
The match between New Zealand and Norway will take place at 2:00 p.m. (Vietnam time) today, July 20, at Eden Park Stadium.
