On May 3, a 14-year-old male student opened fire on a teacher in a classroom in Belgrade, Serbia before continuing to shoot at other students and security guards at the school.
The incident left at least nine people dead, while the teacher who was initially shot and six other students were taken to hospital.
The incident occurred at Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in the Vracar district of central Belgrade, according to local police. Serbian television station N1 quoted a parent whose daughter was a student at the school as saying that the male student opened fire on the teacher before opening fire on other students in the class. According to Milan Nedeljkovic, the head of the Vracar district, doctors are trying to save the teacher. He also said that according to other students, the male student was a new transfer student, good at studying but quiet.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that the school security guard was killed and eight other students were injured. The male 7th grader has been detained. Police have now sealed off the area around the school, continuing to determine the number of casualties and opening an investigation into the motive of the incident.
Serbia is a country with strict gun control laws, shootings are rare in this country.
