Determining 12 teams for the Asian Women's Championship: Vietnam team avoids big opponents

(Dan Tri) - The Iranian women's team is the last team to register for the final round of the 2026 Asian Women's Football Championship. In which, the Vietnamese women's team will be in the second seed group with China and South Korea.

Group A of the 2024 Asian Women's Championship qualifiers has come to a close, while the other groups have already decided who will qualify for the tournament in Australia. The decisive match in Group A between Iran and Jordan has determined the last ticket to the finals.

In this match, Iran won a thrilling 2-1 victory over Jordan. With this result, both teams have 9 points after 4 matches, but Iran is ranked above Jordan thanks to a better head-to-head record.

Thus, up to this point, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has fully identified 12 names participating in the final round of the 2026 Asian Women's Football Championship.

Including 4 teams automatically qualified: host team Australia and the three teams with the best results in the previous Asian championship: China (defending champion), South Korea (runner-up), Japan (ranked 3rd) and 8 teams determined through the qualifying round: Iran (group A), India (group B), Bangladesh (group C), Chinese Taipei (group D), Vietnam (group E), Uzbekistan (group F), Philippines (group G) and North Korea (group H).

AFC will base on the ranking of the teams on the FIFA rankings to divide the seed groups. The specific seed groups include:

Group 1 : Australia, Japan, North Korea

Group 2: China, Korea, Vietnam

Group 3: Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan

Group 4: Iran, India, Bangladesh.

Thus, coach Mai Duc Chung's team avoided two very strong opponents, China and South Korea, in the group stage. The best achievement of the Vietnamese women's team in this playground was reaching the quarterfinals in 2014 and 2022.

The 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup will take place from March 1 to March 21, 2026 in Australia. This is a very important tournament when determining tickets to the World Cup. In which, the 6 teams with the best results in the tournament will have tickets to the world- level tournament in 2027.
