Italy and Belgium were drawn in Group F in the 2025 Volleyball World Cup group stage, with Belgium pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Against the defending champions, the Belgian boys played explosively and won 3-2, thereby securing the top spot in the group. This defeat also caused Italy to drop to second place in the group, having to face a strong opponent, Argentina, in the round of 16.

But in the following matches, the defending champion quickly showed that this defeat was purely an accident, coming from their subjectivity.

After beating Argentina with 3 straight sets, Italy played even more explosively in the rematch with Belgium. They crushed their opponents with a score of 25-13, 25-18, 25-18 and finished the match in just over 1 hour.

Not long after, Italy also confirmed their semi-final opponents. That was Poland - who also easily beat Türkiye in a similar way, with the score 25-15, 25-22, 25-19.

There were no surprises in either match as Poland and Italy are considered the two top contenders for the tournament. In the world men's volleyball rankings, Poland currently holds the number 1 position in the world with 403.12 points, while Italy is close behind with 368 points.

The upcoming match between the two teams in the semi-finals is therefore also considered the "early final" of the Volleyball World Championship.

The two teams have a very balanced head-to-head record, with each team having 2 wins in the last 4 encounters.

The remaining two quarter-final matches of the tournament, USA - Bulgaria and Czech - Iran, will take place on September 25.
