On the surface, the new foreign policy orientation of the current government in Sweden is surprising.
This new orientation, expressed by the Swedish Foreign Minister, is a shift from the long-held goal of striving to become a moral world power to one that focuses purely and first of all on Sweden's interests and security.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard speaks in Singapore in November 2024
In fact and in essence, this adjustment is not surprising because of logic and cannot be otherwise, but only sooner or later after this country abandoned its neutrality policy to join the NATO military alliance. Once standing in the ranks of members of the military alliance, Sweden can no longer continue to be neutral but must choose sides in Sweden's foreign relations and in all the world political issues that are arising now as well as in the future. Military alliances such as NATO always assert that they exist only to ensure the security of their members, but in reality they participate at many levels, even directly in wars outside the territory of their members.
It seems that Sweden both wants and is forced to redefine its interests and priorities. Rising up and being recognized by the world as a moral world power has become impossible for Sweden. Joining NATO, which is currently engaged in an uncompromising resistance to Russia and supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, is of course in the most practical strategic interest for this country, ensuring its own security and building a political and security role for Europe. Sweden's approach to national interests here is therefore very timely and this awareness is still timely, not too late for Sweden.
