According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade 's report, in the first six months of 2025, the cumulative total electricity production of the entire national system is estimated at 156.4 billion kWh, 3.04% higher than the same period in 2024, reaching 45% of the 2025 plan; the peak power consumption of the national electricity system reached 51,672 MW, 5.7% higher than the same period in 2024.
The electricity supply plan for the remaining months projects a total electricity production and import volume of approximately 331.4 billion kWh for the whole year of 2025, representing a 7.39% increase compared to 2024. For 2026, three scenarios for electricity demand growth have been developed: a baseline scenario with a growth rate of 10-12%, corresponding to a GDP growth rate of around 6.5-7% and normal weather conditions; a high scenario with a growth rate of 13-14%, corresponding to a GDP growth rate exceeding 7% and prolonged heatwaves; and an extreme scenario with a growth rate exceeding 15%, corresponding to breakthrough economic growth targets and widespread extreme weather events.
In Quang Tri province, there are currently 33 power plants and 151 rooftop solar power systems in operation with a total capacity of 1,119.5 MW. In the period 2024-2025, it is expected that 4 wind power plants with a total capacity of 156 MW and 7 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 93 MW will come into operation and generate electricity commercially. This is a relatively large source of electricity supply compared to the electricity demand in the area.
Regarding connection to the national power grid, wind power projects in Quang Tri mainly transmit power to the 220 kV grid, while the remaining power plants generate electricity directly to the 110 kV and 22 kV distribution grids.
Within the province, there is the Hai Lang LNG Thermal Power Plant Project, Phase 1 - 1,500 MW, invested by a consortium of T&T Group Joint Stock Company, Hanwha Energy Joint Stock Company, Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KOSPO). The project is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2029.
In addition, Quang Tri province has a cluster of synchronized transmission grid and power source capacity evacuation projects, including: the Lao Bao 500kV substation (Huong Hoa district) and connecting 220kV line; the Lao Bao – Quang Tri 2 500kV switching station 500kV line; and the Quang Tri 2 500kV switching station 500kV. These projects are invested in by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). According to the schedule, these projects are expected to be operational in 2027.
Regarding the plan to ensure electricity supply in 2025 in the province, the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee requested the Quang Tri Power Company and member units of the Central Vietnam Power Corporation to implement the 2025 electricity supply plan flexibly, ensuring efficiency and suitability to the local power source and grid situation; ensuring proactive measures to handle power shortages and reduce electricity production during the peak summer season of 2025 as regulated.
At the conference, leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade informed and discussed difficulties and obstacles in the progress of key power source and grid projects including hydropower, coal-fired thermal power, gas-fired power, LNG thermal power, nuclear power, wind power; projects under the Power Plan VIII... nationwide.
