Reporter (PV): Professor, could you please tell us about the development of fine arts in Ho Chi Minh City in recent years?

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien: After the country's reunification, Ho Chi Minh City's fine arts have made strong changes and achieved many outstanding achievements. In each stage of development, the city's fine arts have always fulfilled their political tasks well. Compared to the fine arts of the whole country, the city's fine arts are dynamic, approaching the world's modern fine arts very early such as: installation fine arts, performance fine arts, video and photo fine arts and even body painting.

In recent years, when our country has integrated comprehensively with the world , the city's artists have also quickly approached the world's common art activities through international cooperation activities; solo exhibitions, group exhibitions are held both domestically and internationally. The city's painters and sculptors have also participated and won many prestigious international awards. Many types of fine arts in public cultural spaces commonly found in the city today such as: Decorative arts of architecture, parks, streets; murals; graffiti art; installation art... are also developing vigorously. Fine arts activities in the city are organized regularly and continuously with the participation of many artists and many young people, contributing to the construction and development of Vietnamese culture and people.

PV: After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City became a "super city" and what were the impacts, opportunities and challenges in the development of the city's fine arts, Professor?

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien: After the merger, the organization of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association did not have any major impact. The Association has 6 majors and 13 clubs with more than 800 official members and when merging, the number of members received from the old localities was only a few dozen people. Meanwhile, the number of fine arts members in the old localities was also not many, only about a few dozen people. Compared to before, the scope of the Association's activities will be wider but will create more development potential, enrich the spiritual life of the people, and at the same time contribute to the development of local tourism. The newly merged localities are all major economic, cultural and tourism centers of the region. In the coming time, the fine arts activities of Ho Chi Minh City will be more vibrant and developed than before. We plan to build two facilities in the old localities to create an environment to help fine arts activities spread and develop. In particular, after the merger, the need to develop public art in Ho Chi Minh City is very large, not only to improve people's aesthetic awareness but also to contribute to building and developing culture.

PV: To develop public art, what will the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association focus on, Professor?

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien: Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association is paying a lot of attention to developing public art, that is, how art must reach and be close to the public. Fine art in public cultural spaces in Ho Chi Minh City is an important factor in beautifying the urban landscape. We must have public works that create highlights, contributing to building an increasingly beautiful urban space, attracting tourists and being a cultural symbol in each locality and region. Next, we must focus on building community art, that is, beautifying each residential area, turning previously forgotten and abandoned areas into art spaces, such as murals, graffiti art..., creating unique art spaces, even becoming tourist attractions, "check-in" spots for young people. In addition, the Association will pay attention to sculpture in flower gardens, parks or walking streets not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in places in old localities and Con Dao special zone.

PV: According to Professor, what solutions do Ho Chi Minh City and the City Fine Arts Association need to develop art spaces?

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien: To develop the art space in Ho Chi Minh City, especially after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City needs to have synchronous solutions, including perfecting mechanisms and policies; focusing on investing in infrastructure, building creative spaces; promoting the cultural industry; at the same time, raising awareness and participation of the community. With the City Fine Arts Association, we pay great attention to training and regularly open painting classes and issue vocational certificates. Classes are held on weekdays, including classes for children on weekends. In particular, we increase the application of modern science and technology to the learning process and the process of creating art works through opening technology and artificial intelligence (AI) classes. In addition, we regularly organize seminars on silk painting and oil painting for university students and those who are passionate about painting. The City Fine Arts Association will also coordinate with businesses and tourist areas to carry out art projects, contributing to beautifying the landscape and environment, and raising people's awareness and aesthetic level.

PV: Thank you very much, Professor!
