While the YU7 electric crossover is still in the ramp-up phase of production, the waiting time for delivery has exceeded a year. This situation has prompted Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun to suddenly advise customers to consider buying cars from rival brands if they cannot wait any longer. The YU7 is Xiaomi's second electric car, following the success of the SU7 sedan - a model that has surpassed the Tesla Model 3 in sales in China since its launch in early 2024.
With a crossover design and positioning in a higher segment, YU7 is expected to continue to create strong appeal, even capable of competing directly with Tesla Model Y. Within an hour of opening pre-orders, Xiaomi received nearly 300,000 orders for the YU7. However, in the first month, the company only delivered a little over 6,000 cars due to production difficulties, a clear reflection of the “bottlenecks” at Xiaomi’s factory in Beijing. Currently, the YU7 is produced at the Phase 2 factory, with a capacity equivalent to 150,000 vehicles/year, but has not yet reached optimal output due to its new operation. Meanwhile, the Phase 1 factory is focusing on the SU7 model, which also has a waiting time of 6-8 months depending on the version. The long delivery times have left many customers expressing their disappointment on social media. In response to the backlash, Lei Jun posted a message to reassure users, pledging that Xiaomi is working to increase production capacity.
At the same time, Xiaomi's CEO also surprised by advising users to consider other electric vehicle models if they need a car urgently. “If you need to buy a car right away, the new energy vehicles made in China are also very good,” Lei Jun wrote on Weibo. “Check out the Xpeng G7, Li Auto i8 or even the Tesla Model Y.” Although considered a “rare act of honesty” among auto industry leaders, Lei Jun’s statement has attracted mixed opinions. Some users believe that this is a straightforward and respectful approach to customers, while many others believe that Xiaomi needs to improve its production capacity soon to maintain consumer trust.
The YU7 is an electric SUV developed on the Modena platform, with a length of 4,999 mm, a width of 1,996 mm and a height of 1,608 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The car has 9 exterior colors, including green inspired by Colombian emeralds and orange and metallic titanium versions. The vehicle weight ranges from 2,140-2,460 kg depending on the configuration. Wheel options are 19 and 20 inches. The car uses electric folding door handles, allowing keyless opening and smartphone access to the trunk. The interior is fully upholstered in leather, with zero-gravity front seats covered in Nappa leather that can recline up to 123 degrees and integrate a 10-point massage function. The rear seats are electrically adjustable up to 135 degrees and have a 6.68-inch touch screen for climate control, music and navigation... The YU7 will be sold in three configurations. The YU7 RWD with a rear motor has a capacity of 315 horsepower, 528 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.88 seconds, with a maximum speed of 240 km/h. The YU7 Max AWD version uses two motors for a capacity of 681 horsepower and 866 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 3.23 seconds, with a maximum speed of 253 km/h.
