Global travel psychology trends in summer 2025

VHO - Economic instability, security issues, and tariff policies are affecting the travel psychology of many people around the world.

Francisco Ayala and his wife canceled their trip to see the Northern Lights this year for various reasons.

According to Mr. Ayaka, his and his wife's trip to Alaska had to be postponed when some European countries raised warnings to their citizens about potential problems when entering the US.

And another issue is economics .

“These things are coming as soon as I see the market volatility,” Mr. Ayala said.

Global travel advisors are also seeing the effects of that uncertainty.

More than 80% of 460 travel advisors recently surveyed by TravelAge West expressed concern about the impact of a possible economic downturn on their businesses, with more than half saying they were "very" concerned about the impact of government policies, according to CNN.

Travelers' top concern was economic uncertainty, followed by worries about safety and security, increased costs due to tariffs, border immigration policies, and travel restrictions.

Nowadays, travelers are increasingly inclined to wait and watch their plans more carefully.

Factors affecting tourists' psychology

Ms Mahnken first saw signs of trouble in early April, when US stocks plunged on trade tensions.

Her travel agency also started getting calls from customers confirming trip cancellations. Others were looking for refunds.

She said cash flow uncertainty will force consumers to put discretionary spending on hold.

Flight analytics firm Cirium also pulled flight booking data from online travel agencies from late January to early May, when people typically book summer trips.

According to the data, travel bookings for June, July and August fell nearly 10% when looking at flights from major US airports to popular European destinations, compared to the same period last year.

Flights booked in the opposite direction from Europe to the US fell 12% in the same period, a drop that significant is unusual, according to Jeremy Bowen, CEO of Cirium.

“We don’t typically see this on such a large scale and in such a short period of time. In fact, bookings in Q1 were significantly lower than at the beginning of the year,” Ms. Bowen added.

While data on American travelers booking summer trips to Asia has increased in Hong Kong (China) and Tokyo (Japan), the number of flights to other major cities in the region has decreased.

Domestic travel in the US also recorded a decrease of about 5%, using the same search parameters.

“Everyone is waiting to see what happens next,” said Ms. Bowen.

The impact of the stock market also has some influence. As the stock market stabilizes, Ms. Bowen 's clients start to feel a little more comfortable spending more.

But it's a phenomenon that travelers like Ms. Mahnken liken to a "balloon" that can change tomorrow. That's especially true for anyone worried about job security.

"Travelers are now booking closer to home, rather than further away. In the next four to six months, the number of travelers booking will also increase. This is the usual booking timeframe for major holidays," she said.

Mr. Ayala also assessed the economic recession in the coming time. He said that there will be signs of slowing down of the economy, so people can save themselves from trouble.

Take different trips

Deloitte's 2025 Summer Travel Survey, released on May 20, found that Americans plan to take leisure trips this summer by 5%, but it may still be cheaper than it was just a few months ago.

People booking summer trips are often looking for last-minute deals.

“There are actually some deals in places like New England and the Maine coast, where you would normally have to book years in advance to secure a spot. But we’ve seen some good deals there if you avoid peak times,” suggests Tiffany Funk, co-founder of point.me, a travel destination optimization site.

Additionally, the state of Florida (USA) can get some pretty good prices for family-friendly destinations but experts advise avoiding it during the summer holidays.

Cruise lines are also pushing the opportunity to fill rooms recently. Or theme parks are also a good suggestion this summer with affordable prices.

“I see a lot of cruise lines having really good sales recently. With theme parks, we see a lot of marketing and promotions during the peak season. We can offer a good alternative in the summer,” said Tiffany Funk.
