New trends from virtual reality paintings

Ms. Dang Thi Minh Hang (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) is one of the pioneers in bringing virtual reality painting technology to the Vietnamese market. After two years of creating this type of artwork, she has now released more than 15 impressive pieces.

Drawing real pictures in virtual space

Having worked as a digital artist and comic book illustrator for a considerable period, Minh Hang turned to virtual reality technology to avoid falling behind and keeping pace with the younger generation of artists.

"Virtual reality painting is a trend among many young artists who enjoy creating with technology. This art form is not yet widely practiced in Vietnam, so I have to refer to all the materials and software from foreign artists," said Minh Hang.

According to Ms. Minh Hang, virtual reality artists don't need paint, brushes, or drawing paper; they only need to wear VR glasses to start creating art. Depending on their needs, users can choose VR software with suitable functions.

"This is a simulated environment created by humans using specialized software, controlled by virtual reality devices. Users can feel, move, interact, and explore in the virtual environment through devices such as VR glasses or simply by directly manipulating it with their hands," she explained.

Unlike 2D paintings, which are only used for exhibitions or decoration, virtual reality paintings have a wider range of applications, such as backdrops, TV commercials, and event intros.

Besides virtual reality paintings, Minh Hang also creates paintings using mixed reality (MR) technology – a technology that blends the real and virtual worlds , creating a more immersive experience for viewers. With MR paintings, viewers don't need to wear VR glasses to visualize what the artist is painting, as various applications and devices can record the artist's brushstrokes and actions.

Virtual reality artist Minh Hang says that this technology is not yet "mature," so there are risks involved in its application. Only through practical use and exploration of its functions will she know what limitations the software needs to overcome. Therefore, she often has to consult with technical teams abroad to perfect the virtual reality painting technology.

Participate in the software upgrade.

Not only is Minh Hang one of the pioneers in bringing VR painting to the Vietnamese market, but she is also the founder of the Endangered project – applying VR art to wildlife conservation. This female artist realized that with the limitless potential in creative techniques, humans can apply technology to minimize damage to the natural environment.

Through her artistic talent, Minh Hang's works tell stories that connect people with nature and everything in life, such as: "Valentine's Garden," "Spring Maiden," "Lego City," etc.

For most people who enjoy virtual reality paintings, the experience is quite interesting. Experiencing virtual reality for the first time, Mr. Tran Cong Khanh (District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) enthusiastically compared it to watching 3D movies, viewing virtual reality paintings provides a much more realistic and captivating feeling. Viewers can walk and explore every corner of the painting.

Having started learning how to create paintings using virtual reality technology for her work, Ms. Ha Huynh Mai (Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) commented that the paintings have depth and are very vivid...

Virtual reality art has begun to gain attention in the market and attract public interest. Spanning an area of 3,800 m2, the Van Gogh exhibition space at Gigamall Shopping Center (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) incorporates cutting-edge global technology applications. Combined with the decorative space, it recreates "living" moments that are rich in cultural and artistic value from the simple life of the renowned painter Vincent van Gogh.

This type of artwork also has many outstanding advantages, as it can be stored and accessed online, thereby saving both costs and time for art appreciation.

"Instead of spending the whole day driving around the city to visit different art galleries, or even traveling to other cities or countries, with a virtual reality showroom, viewing artwork through a handheld device, a phone, right from your sofa at home will be a fascinating experience," commented a virtual reality artist.

It's not easy to draw.

Ms. Minh Hang said that the time it takes to complete paintings created using virtual reality technology varies depending on the scale and requirements. Portrait paintings usually take one day, while landscape paintings take 1-2 weeks.

According to Minh Hang, the most difficult color to paint in virtual reality art is white. The algorithms that create light and shadow effects are often monotonous and easily become boring, and they tend to have a color cast, making white objects appear dull. To maintain the clarity of the white areas, she uses a special brush that is unaffected by light, and then adjusts the fog mode to create depth.

Although painting using virtual reality technology is not limited by time or location, and the painting can last indefinitely, there are still some limitations, such as: technical malfunctions, device disconnections causing the painting to suddenly disappear, or software conflicts every time there is an update...

Virtual reality applications in many fields.

Globally, virtual reality technology is commonly used to create simulated or artificial environments for purposes such as education, healthcare , culture, tourism, scientific research, and space exploration.

Virtual reality technology can help people conduct research in a virtual environment without needing a physical laboratory, significantly reducing costs and time. In the field of medicine, the use of virtual reality and augmented reality allows for the simulation of surgical procedures, facilitating the training of doctors without risking patients.
