Being gay just because... you're imitating others.

During adolescence, children's understanding of gender is limited, and their psychological and physiological development is still unstable. Their living environment, education , and guidance from family and teachers greatly influence their lifestyle and personality. Many teenagers develop same-sex relationships simply because they want to keep up with trends, seek novelty, or are simply too lonely and need someone to share their feelings with… What should parents do if they discover their child has misconceptions about gender?

More and more teenagers are choosing to date people of the same sex.

Phuong Thanh (a 9th-grade student) told her mother that there were three pairs of girls in her class who liked each other. Her mother, surprised, asked, "Are you sure? Do they really like each other, or are they just close friends? Don't jump to conclusions. If you don't know, don't say things like that; it's not good."

Phuong Thanh quickly explained to her mother that her friends had told her they were in love. She also shared her knowledge about LGBT+, same-sex, bisexual, and transgender relationships with her mother. Phuong Thanh's mother was extremely surprised that her daughter knew more about the LGBT+ community than most adults.

But with the intuition of a 15-year-old girl, Phuong Thanh asserted that her friends were not lesbians. She observed that they still felt affection when boys in their class accidentally touched them, and they were always happy and radiant when mentioning handsome K-pop idols. However, Thanh couldn't understand why they were in love with their female classmates. "Maybe they were too close and mistook it for love?..." Phuong Thanh wondered.

Today, society is quite open when it comes to people with different gender identities. Gay, bisexual, asexual, and transgender people are recognized and respected as normal people. Same-sex and transgender weddings are gradually being recognized in countries around the world .

While many gay people struggle to gain social acceptance and respect, many heterosexual individuals pretend to be gay for attention or to experience a new kind of emotion.

Why are there distorted views about gender?

Some teenagers develop gender identity issues due to ingrained habits. For example, some boys are dressed in dresses and play with dolls from a young age, while girls are dressed in boys' clothes and enjoy boys' games. As they grow older, these habits disrupt their thinking and lead them to self-identify with a specific gender identity. On the other hand, the stereotypes of adults, especially family members, can also influence a child's thinking, making them even more convinced that they are homosexual.

However, the number of children who mistakenly believe they are homosexual due to habits from a young age is not large, and they usually quickly realize their true sexual orientation when they meet someone of the opposite sex who evokes feelings in them.

According to psychologists, when parents notice their children exhibiting behaviors that mimic homosexuality, they should try to remain calm and avoid immediately scolding or condemning them. Instead, they should gently explain to their children the difference between genuine homosexuality and feigned homosexuality.

When talking to their children, parents should avoid discriminatory attitudes towards homosexuals. If the conversation is too difficult, you can provide your child with scientific materials on the topic for them to research independently, or ask a psychologist to talk to your child.

Prohibitions and scolding are not good ways to help children; on the contrary, they will only make children more confused. Parents should treat their children like adults and trust and support them.

Give children time to come to terms with their true gender identity. Don't rush it.

And one thing parents shouldn't forget is to regularly spend time talking to and asking their children about what's happening at school. If you regularly spend time with your children and listen to everything they share, then as soon as they show unusual behavior, parents can quickly recognize it and help them resolve misunderstandings. Don't hesitate to talk to your children about gender and reproductive health; children need to understand correctly to avoid misconceptions or misunderstandings about homosexuality.
