(MPI) - On October 31, 2024, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Planning and Investment , Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Phuong received Vice President in charge of International Affairs, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Iain Watt.

Welcoming Mr. Iain Watt to work at the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Phuong expressed his pleasure to know that UTS has had many close cooperation activities with partners and universities in Vietnam to promote innovation and develop human resources in high-tech industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.
The Deputy Minister also highly appreciated UTS with its long-standing tradition, excellent teaching and research quality in many fields such as technology, medicine , business, law, etc.; hoping that the cooperative relationship between UTS and Vietnamese agencies will increasingly develop and expand, and soon implement the proposed plans in fields such as technology, information, digital technology, etc.
Sharing about Vietnam's development orientation in the coming time, Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Phuong said that the Vietnamese Government is very interested in and prioritizes the development of the semiconductor and AI industries, promoting the training of high-quality human resources to participate in these two potential industries with the goal of training 50,000 engineers from now until 2030.
Therefore, cooperation between UTS and Vietnamese universities is very important to achieve this goal. In the context of Vietnam and Australia upgrading their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Deputy Minister suggested that UTS research and expand the scale of cooperation in other fields to match the bilateral relationship.
Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Phuong suggested that UTS should have a long-term strategic vision and expand the scope of cooperation to work with Vietnam to develop high-quality human resource training programs, thereby strengthening and deepening the relationship between the two countries.
The Deputy Minister also suggested that UTS consider cooperation, develop a research and development (R&D) center, implement cooperation programs to improve innovation capacity, provide training consultancy, incubate, and exchange startups with the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC).
Speaking at the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Iain Watt said that UTS has had many cooperative activities and programs implemented with Vietnamese partners over the past 10 years, receiving support and close coordination from the Government agencies of the two countries; at the same time, he said that the number of Vietnamese students and international students studying at UTS accounts for a large proportion of the school.
Mr. Iain Watt assessed that the Vietnamese Government's needs and priorities for developing the semiconductor industry are very suitable for the university's operations. UTS will continue to implement training programs, student exchanges, research cooperation and scholarships for Vietnamese students, making education continue to become a bridge and a pillar in the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Australia./.
