10 good foods for people with thyroid cancer

VnExpressVnExpress19/08/2023

Seaweed, fatty fish, milk, eggs, berries, and whole grains provide nutrients and energy for people with thyroid cancer.

According to Master, Doctor Nguyen Anh Duy Tung, Nutrihome Nutrition Clinic System, a balanced diet helps provide adequate nutrients to optimize thyroid function and prevent cancer recurrence. Patients should eat foods rich in protein, omega-3, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins A, B, C, E, iodine, selenium, zinc, iron, and magnesium.

Seaweed

Seaweed is rich in iodine - an essential mineral for the body to produce thyroid hormones. Magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, and zinc in seaweed help strengthen the immune system, helping the body destroy cancer cells. Foods containing antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, and fucoxanthin can fight cancer.

Nuts

Almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds are rich in fiber, omega-3, vitamin E, and selenium, which are beneficial for people with thyroid cancer. Fiber makes you feel full longer and reduces the risk of constipation - a common side effect after radiation or chemotherapy.

Omega-3 inhibits cytokines (pro-inflammatory precursors) to help prevent disease recurrence. Vitamin E helps protect the thyroid gland from free radical attacks, helping to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Selenium is essential for antioxidant function and thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium deficiency can increase the risk of thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism, making cancer treatment difficult.

Fatty fish

Eating fatty fish (mackerel, tuna, herring, salmon) helps patients shorten treatment time and improve overall health. This type of fish contains a lot of omega-3, iodine, and protein.

Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory effects, preventing the growth of cancer cells. Iodine helps enhance thyroid function. Protein provides amino acids, abundant energy, helping the body heal damaged cells after cancer treatment.

Milk

Patients are prone to have a bland mouth, digestive disorders, and dry salivary glands after iodine radiation therapy, which can cause difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, and reduced absorption of micronutrients. At this time, milk is a suitable food for patients because it is in liquid form, easy to swallow, and does not put pressure on the digestive system. Milk also contains beneficial protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

Protein provides energy and helps patients maintain muscle. Vitamin D helps the body increase calcium absorption and prevent seizures. Calcium helps prevent dangerous complications during treatment.

Egg

Eggs contain a lot of protein, selenium, iodine, vitamin B12 which are beneficial for people with thyroid cancer. Iodine and selenium help the thyroid gland synthesize important hormones. Vitamin B12 helps prevent symptoms of thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism) - factors that can promote cancer cells to metastasize and recur faster.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables contain many vitamins A, C, E, antioxidants such as glucosinolate, flavonoids, carotenoids... that fight free radicals that attack and stimulate the growth of cancer cells. The high fiber content in green leafy vegetables also supports digestion, reducing the risk of constipation that is common during cancer treatment.

Berries

Strawberries, blueberries, grapes, and raspberries are rich in anthocyanin antioxidants that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Vitamin C, E, and high glucose levels in berries provide energy and strengthen the immune system of patients.

Lean poultry

Poultry meat provides a source of high-quality protein, promoting cell recovery and growth. Protein helps patients maintain muscle, preventing malnutrition. Poultry meat is also rich in vitamins B6, B12... necessary for converting food into energy, maintaining healthy nerve function. Patients should choose organic poultry, remove the skin to avoid absorbing saturated fat.

Beans

Lentils, black beans, green beans, soybeans are rich in protein, fiber, folate, antioxidants. Protein helps cells recover and grow. Fiber maintains a healthy digestive system. Folate helps the body produce new cells. Antioxidants in beans such as isoflavones and genistein prevent the growth and recurrence of cancer cells.

Whole grains

Whole grains such as oats, wheat, quinoa, and brown rice contain complex carbohydrates - the main source of energy for the body, preventing physical weakness and weight loss. Whole grains are rich in fiber, preventing constipation, a side effect in people undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

Thyroid cancer patients should limit iodine-rich foods before radiation therapy with radioactive iodine beams; ensure adequate iodine, selenium, and copper intake after radiation therapy. Maintain a balanced diet, limit processed foods, and ensure food safety.

Doctor Tung recommends that patients should follow the treatment regimen and combine a scientific nutritional diet according to instructions.
