“President Donald Trump’s crazy tariff plan is not only economically reckless, it is also illegal,” Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement.
According to AFP, the southwestern state has received support and joined the lawsuit with 11 other states led by Democrats. The states listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Vermont.
The White House has not yet commented on the above developments.
President Trump has sent markets into turmoil during his second term, reversing decades of free trade policy with the announcement of reciprocal tariffs on many economies.
He also imposed sky-high tariffs on China, prompting Beijing to retaliate with a 125% import tax.
“Trump’s chaotic and lawless tariffs impose a massive tax on Connecticut families and are a disaster for Connecticut businesses and jobs,” Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said.
These states assert that only Congress has the power to impose tariffs and that the president can only invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act when an emergency poses an unusual threat from abroad.
“By claiming the authority to impose massive and ever-changing tariffs on any goods imported into the United States that he chooses, for whatever reason he finds convenient to declare an emergency, the president has upended the constitutional order and unleashed chaos on the American economy,” the lawsuit alleges.
President Trump has repeatedly said his policies will bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.
“Regardless of what the White House says, tariffs are a tax that will be passed on to Arizona consumers,” Mayes said.
On April 23, the New York Times reported that Mr. Trump's approval rating has steadily declined during his first three months in office, reaching a low of 44% this week.
In that context, Democrats are seizing the opportunity to illustrate how his policies are hurting people's pocketbooks.
Last week, California also filed a lawsuit to block Mr Trump's tariffs. California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, called Mr Trump's tariffs "the worst own goal in the history of this country".
