In it, the two sides agreed on the importance of promoting rapid progress towards achieving bilateral trade balance.
The discussion comes as Vietnam faces tariffs of up to 46% announced by US President Donald Trump earlier this month.
However, Washington postponed the implementation of these high tariffs until July to pave the way for negotiations, while a fixed 10% tariff is being applied.

According to the USTR statement, Mr. Greer and Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien directed the two sides' technical teams to conduct in-depth discussions in the coming days to expand market access and address unfair trade practices.
During the phone call, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to developing a comprehensive strategic partnership with the US and wishes to promote economic and trade relations in a balanced, stable, sustainable and effective manner with the US.
Previously, on April 22, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting of the Government Standing Committee with relevant ministries, branches and agencies on preparing for negotiations and promoting balanced, stable and sustainable trade relations with the US.
The Prime Minister requested ministries and branches, especially the negotiating delegation, to prepare well the content for negotiations with the US side.
In particular, negotiations must not complicate the issue, not affect international agreements that Vietnam has participated in, not affect other markets because of one market, and have reasonable solutions for mutual benefit.
According to the Prime Minister, this is also an opportunity for Vietnam to restructure export dynamics, restructure enterprises, diversify markets, diversify products, and diversify supply chains.
Therefore, it is necessary to focus on improving product quality, reducing costs, moving towards high-tech products, green development, circular economy, knowledge economy, sharing economy based on science, technology, and digital transformation according to world trends.
