Joseph Harris-Birtill, born on November 23, 2021, is recognized by Guinness World Records as the youngest member of Mensa at the age of 2. His parents are Dr. Rose and Dr. David Harris-Birtill - both lecturers at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland).

“We knew from a young age that this was an extraordinary child,” his mother told Guinness. “He rolled over for the first time at five weeks, said his first word at seven months and read his first full book aloud at 21 months.”

Diverse intelligence and interests

By age 2, Joseph could read aloud fluently for 10 minutes at a time, count from 1 to 10 in 5 different languages, and count forward and backward to over 100.

Joseph has learned the Greek alphabet, is learning Morse code and is just beginning to show interest in the periodic table of elements. “He is always curious and eager to learn new things,” his mother said .

Despite being ahead of his peers, Joseph is friendly and affectionate, loves to share toys and hug friends. “ He especially enjoys challenges and is excited by complex, difficult problems, from learning to play chess to exploring new concepts,” said Rose.

The process of nurturing many challenges

Joseph's family turned to Mensa in the hope of receiving additional support in raising their child with special abilities. "It is a misconception that everything is easy for smart children. In fact, these children always need the right stimulation and understanding. Without the right conditions, their talents can be overshadowed in environments that are not designed for them," the mother added.

Joseph currently attends a quality daycare, but his parents hope Mensa will provide him with a community of peers to continue developing his intelligence and potential.

The second youngest person ever to join Mensa was Isla McNabb of Kentucky, who was accepted at the age of 2 years and 195 days. For Joseph, his journey as a child genius has only just begun.
