Due to the influence of the circulation of typhoon No. 4 , Mau Duc commune, Con Cuong district, experienced prolonged heavy rain accompanied by very strong thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Recognizing the critical situation, the People's Committee of Mau Duc commune directed farmers to harvest rice and other crops to minimize losses. However, only about 200 hectares have been harvested so far, leaving nearly 130 hectares of unharvested fields submerged and damaged by floodwaters.

In particular, a significant portion of the harvested rice, transported home but unusable due to damp weather and lack of sunshine for drying, has sprouted and become unusable.

Ms. Lang Thi Giang, from Na Duoi village production cluster, Mau Duc commune, has 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of summer-autumn rice, with an estimated yield of 3.5 quintals per sao. However, due to heavy rain, Ms. Giang's family was unable to harvest before the rice was flooded, causing it to sprout right in the field.

"It rained for 10 days straight, so even though the rice was ripe, we couldn't harvest it in time. We didn't know where to dry it after we harvested it. When the water receded, we went to the field to check, and most of the rice grains had sprouted and turned white. Since the rice had sprouted, we harvested it to feed our livestock. This year, my family has lost everything," Mrs. Giang shared.

In a similar situation, the family of Mr. Quang Van Binh (residing in Na Duoi village, Mau Duc commune) planted 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of rice. Upon hearing the news that typhoon number 4 was about to make landfall, his family mobilized all available manpower to harvest the crop.

"After harvesting, heavy rains prevented the rice from being dried. As a result, after only 3 days, the bundles of rice stored indoors had sprouted white shoots," Mr. Binh shared.

On September 26th, speaking with a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper , Mr. Vo Dinh Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mau Duc commune, said that the commune was severely affected and suffered heavy damage during the recent storm number 4.

Specifically, the rice crop was almost completely destroyed, nearly 14 hectares of aquaculture suffered over 30% damage, roads leading to villages were blocked by landslides at dozens of points over several kilometers, and bridges and culverts were washed away or damaged...

"Due to the impact of typhoon number 4, almost all of the rice fields in our commune that were ready for harvest were destroyed. The damage to the rice crop is nearly 7 billion VND; other damages amount to about 3 billion VND."

"We hope that the authorities will support us in dealing with landslides in the school area, residential areas, and inter-village and inter-commune roads. In particular, we hope for support to compensate for losses in rice and other crops so that people can stabilize their morale and recover economically after the floods, and continue production," Mr. Thanh said.

Mau Duc commune is located in western Nghe An province, with 85% of its population being ethnic Thai people; the remaining 10% are Kinh, Hoa, and other ethnic groups.

Besides their main occupations of rice and corn farming, the people here also engage in traditional crafts such as brocade weaving and rice wine making.

Mau Duc commune has 1,481 households with 6,181 people, of which 273 are poor households (accounting for 19.84%) and 446 are near-poor households (accounting for 32.41%).
