Since the beginning of the year, Hai Duong has not recorded any deaths due to rabies. However, according to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), 22 people have died from this disease nationwide, double the number in the same period in 2023.
In 2023, the whole province had 3,752 cases requiring preventive treatment due to dog and cat bites, an increase of 1,186 cases compared to 2022. This number in the first 2 months of this year was 190.
According to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, currently in Hai Duong there are more than 94,100 dog and cat owners with more than 112,200 dogs and cats registered and managed according to regulations. From 2022 to present, the province has not recorded any animals (dogs, cats and other animals) infected with or having to be destroyed due to rabies. Also during the above period, Hai Duong has not recorded any deaths due to rabies.
However, the situation of dogs being let loose on the street or being taken out of the house without muzzles by their owners is still quite common in many localities. Workers at many dog and cat slaughterhouses and businesses are not interested in rabies vaccination. Some people are still indifferent and subjective towards this disease...
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Duong province has just requested relevant departments, branches, units, People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to resolutely and effectively implement rabies prevention work. Thereby, in order to continue to focus on directing and resolutely and effectively implementing rabies prevention work in accordance with the provisions of law; prevent the risk of increasing the number of people requiring preventive treatment for rabies due to animal bites, especially stray dogs and cats, which are dangerous to people.
The Department of Health has also requested the Provincial Center for Disease Control and District Health Centers to continue to coordinate to promote communication about the dangers of rabies, mobilize people to take preventive measures, and proactively go to medical facilities to get rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum.
In 2023, the province administered 68,750 doses of rabies vaccine to dogs and cats, accounting for over 70% of the number of dogs and cats required to be vaccinated. Since the beginning of the year, the province has administered about 35,500 doses of rabies vaccine to dogs and cats, accounting for over 50% of the number of rabies vaccine doses required to be administered to dogs and cats in 2024.
