On November 14 in Chau Doc City, An Giang Provincial People's Committee coordinated with the Vietnam Historical Science Association to organize a national scientific conference "200 years of Vinh Te Canal - Historical value and future vision". The conference was attended by many scientists , experts, historical researchers across the country and leaders at all levels of An Giang province.
Strategic canal, bringing multi-faceted benefits
National conference "200 years of Vinh Te canal - Historical value and future vision"
At the workshop, Mr. Le Hong Quang, Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee, said that according to historical documents of the Nguyen Dynasty, 200 years ago, King Gia Long issued an edict on the completion of the Vinh Te Canal. This was the largest project at that time with a length of 91 km, a width of 30 m, and a depth of 2.55 m, constructed by human power in 5 years.
The Vinh Te Canal project is a testament to the wisdom and ingenuity of our ancestors in conquering nature, demonstrating strategic vision in affirming territorial sovereignty, reclaiming the Southern land, developing the economy, diplomatic relations and strengthening national defense.
"Vinh Te Canal also affirms the great achievements in the career of the famous mandarin Thoai Ngoc Hau and his wife, Chau Thi Te. Over the past two centuries, Vinh Te Canal has always played a particularly important role in many aspects: it is a vital traffic route, connecting regions, creating favorable conditions for transporting and trading goods; it is a source of fresh water to cultivate alluvium for the fields of the entire Long Xuyen quadrangle. Above all, Vinh Te Canal plays the role of a solid natural defense line to protect the southwestern border of the Fatherland," said Mr. Le Hong Quang.
Mr. Le Hong Quang, Secretary of An Giang Provincial Party Committee, spoke at the workshop.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc Cuong, Chairman of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, said that up to now, Vinh Te Canal has brought many advantages to farmers in the Mekong Delta (MD) in the areas it passes through, helping them with irrigation work to serve agricultural production; creating important waterways in the regions; and being an important factor contributing to protecting the security of the Fatherland. Therefore, it can be said that Vinh Te Canal demonstrates the strategic importance of the Nguyen Dynasty kings and has economic, social, cultural, political and historical values to this day.
Promoting Vinh Te canal in the future
According to Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Quang Dao, former Director of the Vietnam Military History Institute, Vinh Te Canal is like an artificial trench, long and wide, with enough depth to prevent the enemy's plots and invasions. The design and construction of the canal near the border shows the timeless vision of the Nguyen Dynasty's kings and mandarins at that time, leaving us today a majestic and poetic rampart on the border.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dinh Le said that scientifically exploiting the potential of Vinh Te Canal will overcome some difficulties caused by natural disasters, especially climate change and the phenomenon of increasingly deep saltwater intrusion into the fields in the Mekong Delta.
Vinh Te Canal seen from above
According to Dr. Ngo Quang Lang, Permanent Vice President of the An Giang Provincial Historical Science Association, over the past 200 years (1824-2024), Vinh Te Canal has always been a heroic symbol in the Mekong Delta about the time of land opening and village establishment associated with the bloody efforts of our ancestors in the history of land preservation and protection of the sovereignty of the southwestern border region. This is a testament to the times, witnessing and recording many historical events that have taken place, from bringing fresh water from the Hau River to the West Sea to create fertile fields with prosperous villages and cities to glorious feats...
The workshop recorded more than 50 articles and presentations by experts and scientists focusing on clarifying the historical role and contributions of Vinh Te Canal to socio-economic development, protecting sovereignty, maintaining national defense and security in the southwestern border of the Fatherland.
Mr. Le Hong Quang, Secretary of An Giang Provincial Party Committee (right cover) and Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee presented flowers to congratulate the conference's chair members.
Presenting directly at the workshop, scientists and researchers discussed enthusiastically to affirm the historical value and role of Vinh Te canal as well as make recommendations and proposals in promoting the great value of Vinh Te canal at present and in the future. Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee, said that this is a valuable source of documents and scientific basis to help An Giang province in the management, exploitation, conservation as well as planning development policies related to Vinh Te canal, contributing to the overall development of An Giang province in the coming time.
The 200th anniversary of the completion of Vinh Te Canal was also held on the same evening.
