Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, former Chairman of FPT Software, FPT Telecom, FPT Corporation and most recently Vice Chairman of FPT University Council (in charge of postgraduate training activities), passed away on the afternoon of July 31.
Mr. Tien once shared with VietNamNet reporters the story of his daughter being admitted to and becoming the class monitor of the specialized Math class at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. However, one day, the father - also a math major - decided to let his daughter leave the specialized school.
His sudden decision made the principal of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted at that time (who was also Mr. Tien's former teacher) very worried. But Mr. Hoang Nam Tien's reason was very simple: He did not want his children to have to study from morning to night.

Mr. Tien said that without the great pressure of having to study at a specialized school or selective class, his daughter has time to play games and pursue other passions such as Japanese comics and cosplay (dressing up as cartoon or comic book characters).
“I never forced my daughter to try to become valedictorian or get high scores. I wanted her to study and live with her passion. Later, my daughter will still be grateful to me for that,” Mr. Tien once shared.
Mr. Hoang Nam Tien is a father with an open and flexible perspective. He does not forbid but tries to balance his children's interests and studies so that they can satisfy their passion and ensure their academic results.
He once said that his daughter loved playing games. While most parents forbade their children from playing games, Mr. Tien thought that this could not be forbidden. At that time, he set a condition: for every 2 hours of studying, his daughter would get 1 hour of playing games, and if her Math score was above 8, she would be allowed to play games freely...
For him, if "children keep achieving good academic results, there is no need to limit games".
He then continued to suggest and negotiate with his son about making money from playing games, instead of just playing. “My son has sold items and characters from the game for 10 million VND,” Mr. Tien shared.
Or the same with cosplay hobby. He said, once, his daughter asked to buy accessories (up to 10 million VND) to dress up as characters. He asked her if she could make that costume? When his daughter said she could, but didn’t have a sewing machine, he thought about it and the next day bought a sewing machine and brought it home, asking her why she didn’t try to make it to sell for money.
Finally, his daughter made similar outfits, not only for herself but also sold them for up to 30 million VND. "Through this, she not only satisfied her passion but also understood the value of money," he once shared with VietNamNet .

Mr. Tien once said that as a child, he mainly lived at home with his mother but still received special education from his father - Major General Hoang Dan.
Every summer, little Tien, who only had 15 days off at that time, stayed with his father in the army. The first time, he stayed with his father when he was only 5 years old. When he grew up, he stayed with the Reconnaissance Company, the Medical Battalion, the Vehicle Company... whatever the soldiers did, where they went, what they ate, little Tien did the same.
“I also did things like military drills, built houses, planted trees, raised pigs... That was a very special way of educating a military commander who rarely had time to be with his children. He never told me what I had to do or how to become a good person... instead, my father set an example,” Mr. Tien said.
During his time with his father, the boy took the opportunity to observe and learn many interesting lessons. When in the military unit, the first thing General Hoang Dan did after finishing work was watering vegetables, planting trees, and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
The boy Hoang Nam Tien followed suit, and when he moved to Tran Phu housing complex (Hanoi), he also grew cassava, tomatoes, raised chickens and pigs. All the children in the area “competed” to grow them. The fathers and mothers were very happy to see their children raise chickens, grow tomatoes, and harvest cassava.
“Perhaps because we did everything, even the smallest things, when we were young, we can now confidently do everything assigned to us because we consider them very normal,” Mr. Tien once reflected.
According to Mr. Tien, parents in each era and each situation have different ways of educating, but the important thing is to help children grow up and believe in themselves. There are many ways for parents to understand their children, help them develop, teach them how to make money, balance their passions... in a close, natural way that is not "a war".
Importantly, parents should talk to their children frankly, sincerely and lovingly, and their children will feel their parents' respect and love.
