3 types of food you should bring to work
Famous American nutrition consultant - Ryan Fernando said: in addition to office equipment and stationery, you should also bring some snacks such as apples, dried fruits and prunes because their nutritional value can help your health and fitness while working.
Sharing the same view, Dr. Biju KS, Medical Director of Vieroots Nutrition Center (India) said: "Carrying snacks like apples, dry fruits, prunes to work is a healthy habit, as long as they replace other common office snacks like fast food, samosas, cutlets, burgers. Otherwise, having such natural foods available on your desk can increase your total calorie intake."
For example, just five prunes can add 100 calories to your total calorie intake, says Dr. Biju KS. But if you replace all fried or baked snacks with natural fruits, nuts, and dried fruits, it is perfectly reasonable and healthy.
According to Dr. Biju KS, most of them are rich in nutrients, high in fiber and low in sugar and salt. They possess the right amount of calories needed to boost energy at the office.
What is the ideal intake?
When it comes to apples, Dr. Biju recommends no more than one medium-sized apple a day. As for dried fruits like prunes or figs, you should stick to no more than five.
For small nuts like almonds, raisins, pumpkin seeds, the general rule is to have a handful of such nuts (about 30 - 50 grams) per day.
A typical daily snack of 1 apple, 5 prunes and a handful of almonds and raisins will provide you with a rich source of nutrients including vitamins A, B, C, E, K, iron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, copper and many other antioxidants, says Mr. Biju.
Because they are rich in fiber and are also effective prebiotics, they are good for your gut microbiome and improve your brain power, motivation and mental energy. This helps improve your work efficiency and productivity.
Note
These snacks are generally healthy for most people, but people with diabetes and those who are already overweight should limit their intake to half the recommended amount.
“Also, for maximum benefit to the gut microbiota, it is important to vary your natural snacks, so that in a week you can consume about 25 types of fruits, vegetables, nuts and dried fruits,” adds Biju.
