On July 31, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) had taken full control of the city of Chasov Yar, as evidenced by several geo-located videos. Thus, after more than a year of fighting, the RFAF has taken control of this strategically important city. In addition, the RFAF is controlling a dominant hill east of the city of Konstantinovka. After 483 days of fierce fighting, the RFAF forces participating in the Chasov Yar offensive, including the 98th Guards Airborne Division, the Espanyola Volunteer Brigade and other units, achieved a significant victory, completely defeating 10 Ukrainian brigades, in the fortress city of Chasov Yar.
The 483-day battle, which began on March 31, 2024, is over, writes Readovka. Now the road to Konstantinovka from the west is open. This puts the Ukrainian army (AFU) before a difficult choice: either to maintain its groups in the eastern and southern regions, or to urgently transfer its forces to the Pokrovsk and Dobropillya directions. However, any decision Kiev makes after Chasov Yar is fraught with risks. Shifting troops to new directions is unlikely to guarantee success, and weakening previous lines of defense could also lead to a collapse of the front. Due to the growing difficulties in Pokrovsk, the AFU is facing an increasing number of crisis points on the front. The 217th RFAF Regiment raised its flag on the last street south of Chasov Yar, and the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had officially taken full control of the fortress city after more than a year of fighting, giving the RFAF a major advantage in attacking the remaining cities of the Donbass region, the RVvoenkor channel reported. Chasov Yar is considered the most fortified “fortress” of the AFU in the “Donetsk defense arc”. The fierce battles for this place have lasted for more than a year. The scale of this operation is clearly shown by statistics provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense, published on the Telegram channel of the Russian Ministry of Defense in the form of infographics.
According to information released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the RFAF has occupied more than 4,200 houses in Chasov Yar. Previously, it was reported that in more than a year of fighting in Chasovy Yar, the AFU's losses here were equivalent to their losses in the Battle of Bakhmut. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, in the final stage of the Chasov Yar operation, about 50 Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner, and about 65 civilians were rescued by the RFAF and brought safely out of the city. At the same time, the RFAF destroyed more than 30 AFU artillery pieces and more than 70 AFU UAV crews were killed. According to the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Viktor Vodolatsky, in the context of the RFAF's capture of Chasov Yar, Kiev began sending additional troops to reinforce the city of Konstantinovka, located 5 km southwest of Chasov Yar. The AFU is strengthening the defenses of Konstantinovka, which is located 100 meters below Chasov Yar. According to available information, the AFU General Staff is sending additional troops to the city area, including foreign mercenaries. At present, there is no information whether the Ukrainian army will organize a defense in Kostiantynivka, where they could be surrounded; or will preserve their forces and retreat to the area of the city of Druzhkovka, blocking the Russian army from bypassing the north of Kostiantynivka, heading straight to Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.
TASS news agency quoted Mr. Vodolatsky as saying that General Syrsky, Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, is urgently transferring reserve units and mercenaries to Pokrovsk, Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. Currently, this area has the largest concentration of troops on the entire Ukrainian battlefield. According to analysts, the RFAF's complete control of Chasov Yar would allow them to approach Konstantinovka from the east. But to do this, they would need to capture several small villages located between the two cities. Most likely, the RFAF will take Konstantinovka in a pincer movement, forcing the Ukrainians to retreat towards Druzhkovka. If the Ukrainians persist in resisting, urban battles will break out. And with such a large force, this will not be easy for Moscow. The AFU General Staff, which is expected to try to stop the RFAF, will advance to the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk region.
Russia's control of Chasovy Yar has significantly changed the situation in the direction of Konstantinovsky. The capture of the largest Ukrainian fortress has opened up a wide operating space for the RFAF and allowed them to advance in at least three directions - northwest, west and southwest of the city.
