Drinking enough water, limiting salt, increasing exercise, eating a balanced diet, avoiding alcohol... are natural ways to detoxify, helping the kidneys stay healthy.

Kidney health is essential to overall health, and adopting healthy habits can prevent serious problems like chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasingly common health problem in adults, with high blood pressure and diabetes being the main causes, accounting for about 40% of cases. Here are 8 detoxifying actions that can improve kidney health naturally.

1. Drink enough water

Drinking enough water throughout the day helps your kidneys filter toxins efficiently and maintain fluid balance. Apart from keeping your kidneys in check, one of the most effective ways to maintain kidney health is to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water helps flush toxins out of your body and significantly reduces the risk of kidney stones, a serious kidney health condition that affects over 12% of Indians.

2. Limit salt intake

Too much salt in the diet can lead to high blood pressure, which over time can impair kidney function. Reducing your salt intake and focusing on whole, natural foods can protect your kidneys and overall heart health.

3. Stay active

“Regular physical activity helps control weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels – all important factors for kidney health. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity and kidney-related complications,” said Dr. Saurabh Pokhariyal, co-founder and director of VitusCare Medlife Pvt. Ltd.

4. Ignoring the signs

If you experience any symptoms such as changes in urination frequency, blood in the urine, inflammation in the feet, ankles, face, muscle cramps, shortness of breath, nausea or fatigue, you should have your kidney function tested and check with a health professional.

5. Maintain a balanced diet

A diet low in processed foods and high in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps prevent high blood pressure and diabetes, the leading causes of kidney disease worldwide . You should also take care of your diet along with ensuring good hydration levels. A balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as lentils, berries, and green leafy vegetables, helps reduce oxidative stress on the kidneys. For better kidney health, blood pressure and blood sugar levels need to be controlled. Therefore, you should avoid processed foods and limit your sugar and salt intake.

6. Avoid smoking and alcohol

Dr Geetanjali Gupta, director of technical operations and quality assurance at Redcliffe Labs, said: "Smoking not only increases blood pressure but also directly affects kidney function and increases the risk of kidney cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the most effective ways to support kidney health. Smoking and alcohol are a toxic combination for the kidneys. Smokers and heavy drinkers are five times more likely to develop CKD than non-drinkers. Therefore, avoiding both smoking and alcohol is essential to ensure kidney function."

7. Avoid taking over-the-counter medications

Painkillers can harm kidney function over time. Avoiding unnecessary medication can protect kidney health, especially for people with pre-existing kidney disease. Research and surveys warn against the use of over-the-counter painkillers, especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, as prolonged or excessive use can lead to kidney failure. All medications should be used in moderation and only after consulting a clinician.

8. Say no to a sedentary lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity and other lifestyle diseases, affecting the health of the kidneys, liver and heart. The latest WHO study calls sitting “the new smoking”, and staying active is essential for improving kidney and general body functions.
