Taking place from July 25 to 31 at the Exhibition House of the City's Center for Culture, Cinema and Exhibition (No. 1 Nguyen Duc Canh, Le Chan Ward, Hai Phong City), the documentary and photo exhibition "Drinking water, remember its source" is an opportunity for city residents and visitors to light incense sticks to commemorate heroic martyrs, and show gratitude to wounded and sick soldiers - those who wrote the heroic epic with blood, tears and the most sacred things in life.

Sacred Memory

In the quiet space, each photo seems to sob and tell a story without words. In early 1988, when the mainland was bustling with Lunar New Year celebrations, soldiers of the Vietnam People's Navy quietly boarded small boats to sail out to sea to fulfill their sacred mission: protecting the Truong Sa archipelago. Just a few months later, on March 14, 64 of them heroically fell in the battle of Gac Ma to protect every sacred stretch of the Fatherland's sea.

The images of the memorial service for the Vietnamese People’s Navy soldiers in the waters of Co Lin, Len Dao, Gac Ma - where their blood mingled with the waves - are not only documentary images but also symbols of immortality. “You are living milestones, lighthouses in the middle of the ocean”, as the seafarers have passed down through generations.

One of the most touching works in the exhibition is a photo capturing the moment four old soldiers hugged each other during a meeting filled with tears and laughter.

What is special is that all four characters in the photo are from Vinh Bao (Hai Phong). The photo was taken by photographer Vu Dung, won two national awards and was exhibited in the United States, as a touching symbol of comradeship.

Not long after its release, the photo was brought along by a delegation from the Hai Phong City Party Committee to present during a trip to the Quang Tri Citadel. The photo was solemnly displayed in an exhibition at the citadel, which marked the thousands of lives lost during the 81 days and nights of fire. “I took that moment, not expecting it to go beyond the scope of a photo. It is a memory, a pride, and the soul of a generation that lived and fought without sparing their lives for the country,” shared photographer Vu Dung.

Remembering the contributions of heroes and martyrs

The exhibition “Drinking water, remember its source” introduces more than 150 works of art, valuable documents and special excerpts about Party and State leaders in the journey of gratitude to those who sacrificed and contributed to the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.

The exhibition also vividly reflects the efforts of Hai Phong city and the whole country in taking care of people with meritorious services through specific and practical programs, policies and gratitude activities.

A piece of emotional content is the image of "disabled but not useless" war invalids - people who have been through war, overcome the pain of loss to continue living, working, and actively contributing to the economic and social development of the city and the country.

The vivid display, combined with explanations and statistical excerpts, helps viewers, especially cadres, students and pupils, have a visual and profound experience. “I couldn’t hold back my tears when looking at the black and white photos of the war. Some of the faces in the photos looked like my relatives. Seeing the exhibition, I realized how much our ancestors sacrificed to keep the peace today,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, 65 years old, a resident of Le Chan ward, as she left the exhibition with red eyes.

“Today’s exhibition is not only an opportunity for us to remember and pay tribute to those who died for the Fatherland, but also a profound reminder of the responsibility to preserve and promote the achievements of the revolution,” emphasized Mr. Vu Khac Lich, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong city.

He also said that over the years, the heroic Port City has always paid special attention and taken good care of those who have contributed to the revolution. From building new houses, repairing hundreds of gratitude houses, to giving thousands of gifts on holidays, investing in renovating martyrs' cemeteries, and making memorial steles more and more spacious - all demonstrate the tradition of "When drinking water, remember its source" preserved through practical actions.

Not flashy, not ostentatious, the photo and documentary exhibition "Drinking water, remember its source" touches the hearts of viewers with sincerity.

Each photo is a stick of incense. Each line of text is a reminder: Never forget those who have fallen so that we can live in freedom and peace today.
