Seedless lychees of a special variety from Thanh Hoa, recently launched for the first time by a business, have sold out quickly despite prices reaching nearly one million dong per kilogram.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa province, for the first time, more than one ton of seedless lychees from the province has been exported to Japan and the UK by Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. Of this amount, 500 kg were exported to Japan and the remaining 600 kg to the UK.

This is a significant milestone for Thanh Hoa province's agricultural sector, as a type of lychee originating from abroad, recently tested on a trial basis, has yielded high commercial results.

This lychee variety was developed by the company in collaboration with the Institute of Agricultural Genetics and is being tested in Ngoc Lac district, covering an area of approximately 30 hectares in Nguyet An commune, following VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to meet export demands.

According to a survey by VnExpress , in the Japanese market, domestically produced seedless lychees are priced at 4,500-5,000 yen per kilogram, equivalent to 750,000-840,000 VND per kilogram. Meanwhile, Vietnamese lychees exported to Japan are sold exclusively at a supermarket chain specializing in Vietnamese products, with a retail price of 1,700 yen per 500 grams (290,000 VND) and a wholesale price of 3,300 yen per kilogram (550,000 VND) for orders of 5 kg or more.

In the Vietnamese market, a representative from Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. stated that they are selling the product at prices ranging from 250,000 to 800,000 VND per kilogram, depending on packaging and quantity. The company distributes the product in boxes, such as a special box priced at 800,000 VND per kilogram, a 2kg box at 550,000 VND, and a 1kg box at 280,000 VND.

The lychees priced at 800,000 VND per kilogram are carefully selected from farms that adhere to strict standards. They have a low sugar content and contain simple sugars, making them suitable for people with diabetes on a diet, and contain three times the amount of trace elements compared to regular lychees. Currently, the first 200 boxes of this type have sold out within a few days of going on sale.

"This price is high, but compared to goods imported from Japan, it's still very attractive," said a representative of the company.

Previously, before Vietnam had seedless lychees, this type was mostly imported from Japan by fruit traders, costing up to 5 million VND per kilogram, more than 150 times more expensive than the Vietnamese variety.

According to the company, in Thanh Hoa province, they have over 1,000 hectares planned for the cultivation of seedless lychee trees. Currently, about 30 hectares are bearing fruit, and the expected harvest from now until the end of June is approximately 15 tons.

Regarding seedless lychees, in 2019, Bac Giang province also introduced seedless lychee varieties to Tan Son commune (Luc Ngan district) with over 500 trees. In the 2022 lychee season, the seedless lychees began to bear fruit and achieved good quality.

Speaking to VnExpress, Mr. Le Ba Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Giang province, said that this year's seedless lychee production will be higher than last year and of good quality. However, the province is still in the research phase and has not yet allowed large-scale cultivation.

Seedless lychees are an imported variety. When ripe, they are bright red, juicy, crisp, and intensely sweet. The advantages of this variety include lower maintenance requirements, resistance to stem borers, good preservation, and high economic value.
