Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum (1913-1991) was originally from Hue but was born and raised in Kon Tum.
Since childhood, Mr. Nguy Nhu Kon Tum showed his intelligence and passion for learning. In 1932, with the feat of passing all three Baccalaureate exams: Baccalaureate in Native Language, Baccalaureate in Spanish Mathematics, Baccalaureate in Spanish Philosophy, he received a scholarship to study abroad at Sorbonne University (France).
During his three years in France, he obtained a bachelor's degree in science , then a master's degree in physics, becoming the first Vietnamese to have a master's degree in physics. In 1939, he continued his studies for a doctorate.

In early 1939, the young intellectual Nguy Nhu Kon Tum was guided by the French scientist F. Joliot Curie, son-in-law and assistant of Marie Curie, to do his doctoral thesis in Physics. But after only a year, World War II broke out.
He once shared that at that time, F. Joliot Curie's laboratory was requisitioned by the French Ministry of Defense. Professor F. Joliot Curie advised him that if he wanted to continue staying, he had to meet two conditions: apply for French citizenship and be recruited by the French Ministry of Defense.
"But I think your country needs you more than France," Professor Kon Tum recounted his teacher's advice to his students and colleagues later. He listened and returned home at the end of 1939.

According to the People's Police Newspaper , in 1946, President Ho Chi Minh invited Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum (then Director of the Indochina Campus) to hold the position of Minister of Education. However, the Professor modestly declined, with the reason: "The Minister of Education must be someone with extensive expertise in social sciences and humanities to manage and innovate well. I am a natural scientist, I am afraid it will be difficult to complete the task."
Instead, he nominated Professor Nguyen Van Huyen - who has deep knowledge of culture, history and society - to take on the position of Minister.
After that, President Ho Chi Minh and the Government appointed Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Huyen as Minister of Education, and he held this position for 30 years (1946-1975). For his part, Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum happily accepted the responsibility of Director of Secondary Education, under the Ministry of Education.
