Sinner and Alcaraz create a super attractive final |
Yesterday, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannick Sinner created one of the best Grand Slams finals in history at Roland Garros 2025. The Italian world number 1, Sinner won the first two sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6, before Alcaraz fought back in the third set.
In the fourth set, Sinner had a great chance to win the title when he had 3 championship points on Alcaraz's serve, when the score was 5-3. Even when Alcaraz saved all 3 points and shortened the score to 5-4, Sinner still had a chance to win the trophy when he served next. However, the Italian player was broken by Alcaraz and lost the tie-break series that followed.
A similar scenario occurred in set 5, but Alcaraz and Sinner switched roles. This time, Alcaraz broke serve in the first game and took the upper hand, maintaining the advantage until the score was 5-4. Entering the deciding game, Alcaraz served but was broken back by Sinner to tie the score at 5-5. The two took each other to a super tie-break (touch 10, move 2). Here, Alcaraz showed his superiority and won 10-2 to be crowned champion.
Alcaraz thus maintained his unbeaten record in reaching the Grand Slam final (5 times). This was also his 5th consecutive win over Sinner. He became the 9th player in the Open Era to win the Grand Slam title after losing the first two sets in the final.
“Honestly, I would have preferred to win in three sets,” Alcaraz said after the match. “But when the odds are against you, you have to fight and keep fighting. This is a Grand Slam final. This is not the time to get tired. This is not the time to give up. This is the time to keep fighting, try to find your moment and keep fighting until the end.”
“I think real champions are made in situations where you deal with that pressure, with those situations, in the best way possible. That's what real champions do their whole careers. I just try to be comfortable in situations where there's pressure and not be afraid.”
Meanwhile, Sinner admitted that he was in pain but also happy with his performance. The Italian said: "This defeat is very painful, but I can still be happy that I have reached this level. It is clearly a very high-level match, and I am happy to participate."
“I tried to clear everything after each set. At the Grand Slams, I always think I'm starting from zero when I enter a new set. That's how I control my emotions.”
