According to Tech4Gamers , the latest report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has painted a bleak picture for the graphics card market, where NVIDIA is 'alone' with an overwhelming market share. In the third quarter of 2024, NVIDIA accounted for 90% of global GPU sales, far ahead of AMD with only 10% and Intel was almost 'invisible' with a small number of graphics cards sold.
NVIDIA 'dominates' with 90% of GPU market in hand
NVIDIA's 'empire' is stronger than ever
NVIDIA’s dominance is built on a number of factors, including the superior performance of its RTX cards, a marketing strategy that appeals to gamers’ psychology, and the slowness of its competitors. While AMD struggles to regain its lost ground, Intel has yet to make a significant impact with its Arc cards.
Since acquiring ATI in 2006, AMD has steadily lost market share to NVIDIA. Focusing on the mid-range segment may help AMD survive, but it’s not enough to compete head-to-head with the blue giant. The red team needs a breakthrough, and the upcoming RX 8000 series cards are expected to be their secret weapon.
Intel, despite entering the game with its Arc line of cards, is still not strong enough to compete. The 'blue team' still needs to improve performance and price, while also ramping up marketing to attract users.
Not only is the competition fierce, the GPU market is also facing many difficulties. Graphics card sales dropped sharply in the third quarter, reaching only 8.1 million units, down 7.9% compared to the same period last year. Users tend to wait for new generations of cards, while the difficult economic situation also causes purchasing power to decrease.
JPR predicts that the GPU market will continue to be sluggish for the next two years, posing a major challenge for all three companies. Can AMD and Intel surprise, or will NVIDIA continue to reign at the top? The answer will be revealed in the future.
