Maguire played well on the day MU beat Chelsea. |
Three valuable points not only helped Ruben Amorim and his team temporarily escape the pressure, but also marked a special milestone: Harry Maguire reached 250 appearances for the "Red Devils". After the match, he received a series of congratulations, notably a meaningful message from former teammate Nemanja Matic.
Maguire unexpectedly returned to the squad
Before the match, many people were surprised when Amorim dropped Leny Yoro to start Maguire. But considering Chelsea are the team scoring the most goals from set pieces in the league (4 goals in 4 matches), this decision makes sense. Maguire, although no longer in his prime, is still experienced and strong in the air.
And he did not disappoint. In the 70 minutes on the field, before being withdrawn to preserve strength, Maguire played solidly, constantly clearing the opponent's high balls. His presence helped MU's defense become more stable, especially after Casemiro received a red card and the team had to retreat to defend.
Before kick-off, United presented Maguire with a shirt commemorating his 250 appearances for the club. Six years since his debut – which also came in a 4-0 win over Chelsea – Maguire has experienced both glory and bitterness: captaincy, criticism, and even a near miss at Old Trafford. Yet he is still here, patient and persistent, and now he has been rewarded with a memorable milestone.
Maguire still shows his value in defense. |
On Instagram, Maguire emotionally wrote: “250 games for this great club. Great fighting spirit from the whole team, now it’s time to move on.” The post quickly received many responses. Bruno Fernandes, who reached 100 goals, called him “a big brother with a great performance.”
In particular, Nemanja Matic - a former teammate who now plays for Sassuolo - also sent a message: "Congratulations, big guy". For a player known for his calmness and understanding of the value of perseverance like Matic, this wish has a lot of meaning. It is not only a recognition of the milestone, but also a show of respect for a teammate who shared the difficult days at Old Trafford.
Symbol of resilience
The win over Chelsea was not a perfect performance from United. The team still showed flaws: Casemiro’s lack of discipline, the attack not maintaining constant pressure. But in the context of Amorim being under much skepticism, the image of Maguire holding his head high after his 250th match is especially evocative.
At Old Trafford, not everyone can persevere through the thorny path. Maguire did it, to enter the group of 100 players with the most appearances for the club - far surpassing Matic himself (189 matches) and only behind Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw in the current generation.
Ryan Giggs with 963 games is still a distant benchmark, but Maguire doesn’t need to compare. For him, every game he plays now is a testament to his fighting spirit. And Matic’s message further underscores the recognition: sometimes, a player’s greatest value lies not in the spotlight, but in the ability to stand firm in the face of adversity.
