Now a museum, the 788 members of India's parliament will move into a new, triangular complex as part of a $2.4 billion plan to rebuild the institution with a more Indian identity.
“Today is an occasion to remember and reflect on the journey of 75 years of the Indian Parliament before shifting to the newly inaugurated building,” Mr. Modi said in a special session ahead of the move on Tuesday.
In May, Mr Modi inaugurated the new parliament building, part of an ambitious redevelopment of the Central Vista complex in New Delhi. The new, larger, four-storey building can accommodate 1,272 people.
“This is a very emotional moment to bid farewell to the old parliament building… Its glory also belongs to us,” Mr. Modi told lawmakers at the old parliament building.
