According to the annual report from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement released in April, China and India continue to be the two leading countries in the number of international students coming to the US in 2022, with 324,196 and 297,151 people, respectively. These two rankings have not changed in many years and are now far ahead of the third-ranked country, South Korea, with 62,617 international students.

However, compared to 2021, China recorded a significant decrease of nearly 25,000 people, while India increased sharply with more than 64,000 international students. This caused the gap in the number of international students coming to the US between the two countries from 116,141 people in 2021 to 27,045 international students, a decrease of more than 4 times. If this trend continues, China is likely to lose the "top spot" to India.
The report also revealed some new trends in the number of international students in the US. All four regions of the US saw an increase in international student applications. California remained the most popular state, with more than 225,000 international students enrolling at schools, accounting for 16.5% of the country’s international students.
Regarding university education programs, the report shows that the majority of international students are studying for master's degrees (accounting for 41% of the total number of international students), followed by bachelor's degrees (37%), doctoral degrees (16%) and associate degrees (6%). In particular, fields such as computer science, foreign languages other than English, business administration, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering... are attracting 50% of international students to enroll, or 688,075 people.

In primary and secondary schools (K-12), there were 2,933 Vietnamese students studying abroad, accounting for 5.5% of the total number of international students studying at these levels and ranking 5th after China (25.3%), South Korea (8.2%), Mexico (7.6%) and Spain (6%).
