According to local media, the Indian army used T-72 main battle tanks to destroy many Pakistani positions along the border from May 7 to 10. These armored vehicles play an important role in destroying routes that terrorists can use to infiltrate into Indian territory.
NDTV reported that the T-72 tanks had been deployed ahead of “Operation Sindoor” – which targeted suspected terrorist bases in Pakistan-controlled territory. An Indian army officer said: “We also targeted enemy posts that were used to support the infiltration operation. We knew which posts were used as bases and we took an informed decision to attack those targets.”

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to an April terror attack in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 people. New Delhi blamed the attack on an extremist group affiliated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, while Islamabad denied any involvement.
Pakistan responded with airstrikes in several locations in Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens, according to New Delhi. Fighting between the two South Asian neighbors continued until May 11, when a ceasefire was agreed.
The T-72 tank has long been the backbone of the Indian Army’s armored forces. In March, New Delhi signed a $248 million contract with Rosoboronexport, Russia’s defense export agency, to purchase engines for the T-72. The contract includes technology transfer for local production under the Indian government ’s “Make in India” initiative.
Between 2005 and 2025, Rosoboronexport signed contracts worth $50 billion with India, with the total value of defense equipment supplied by Russia reaching $80 billion. In the recent campaign, India also deployed the Russian-made S-400 mobile air defense system to intercept counterattacks from Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that equipment like the S-400 gave India unprecedented power.
Currently, about 60% of India's military equipment comes from Russia, and both countries have expressed a desire to continue expanding defense cooperation.
