On December 2nd, the An Giang Provincial Irrigation Department issued a plan for operating the irrigation system in December 2025 to proactively regulate water levels, prevent floods and tidal surges, control salinity, and facilitate waterway transportation at sluice gates in 48 communes (formerly part of Kien Giang province). The operation will be implemented flexibly according to weather conditions, ensuring the safety of production and daily life for the people.

At the An Bien - An Minh coastal sluice gate system (comprising the communes of Tay Yen, Dong Thai, Tan Thanh, Dong Hung, Van Khanh, and An Minh), the sluice gates are being operated to control salinity and store freshwater for rice production in the 2025-2026 crop season, as requested by the local authorities. Simultaneously, the authorities proactively open and close the gates as needed to drain water, prevent flooding, and mitigate tidal surges.
For the U Minh Thuong buffer zone (U Minh Thuong commune), the sluice gates are operated flexibly to drain floodwaters, control salinity, and prevent tidal surges according to water level fluctuations. The Irrigation Sub-Department regularly coordinates with local authorities to inspect and update information for timely regulation.
At the O Mon - Xa No dike system (Vinh Hoa Hung, Hoa Thuan, Hoa Hung communes), all sluice gates are freely opened to drain water and reduce flooding. Meanwhile, in the Chau Thanh area (Binh An commune), the gates are actively opened and closed to drain water, treat pollution, and prevent tidal surges. Simultaneously, salinity levels are closely monitored to coordinate the operation of the Cai Lon - Cai Be irrigation system.
In the Rach Gia area specifically, the Song Kien sluice gate is open at 5 out of 5 gates, and sluice gate No. 1 is open at 1 out of 1 gate to drain floodwaters and discharge pollution. The remaining sluice gates are regulated appropriately to control salinity, drain waterlogged areas, or prevent tidal surges when required. The Irrigation Sub-Department, in coordination with the People's Committee of Vinh Thong Ward, has widely disseminated this information so that people can proactively plan their production and waterway transportation.
In the Long Xuyen Quadrangle area, the Tha La and Tra Su sluice gates are open to regulate floods, while other sluice gates are open in one direction to the sea to serve aquaculture and prepare for the winter-spring planting season.
The Department of Irrigation has requested local authorities to inspect and reinforce vulnerable sections of dikes and embankments, and repair any damage to the structures to ensure safety against floods, high tides, and unusual sea level rise.
