Does eating grilled meat cause cancer?

Báo Gia đình Việt NamBáo Gia đình Việt Nam13/09/2024

Taiwanese nutritionist Xu Qiongyue recently shared a rare case on the show “Focus 2.0”. Accordingly, a 20-year-old girl had colorectal cancer, and her mother was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. Because the girl was so young, the doctors wanted to ask about her medical history to find the cause.

After careful investigation, their eating habits were suspected to be the source of their illness.

The mother and daughter had a common eating habit of grilling meat three times a week and using recycled car tire frames as grills. Not only that, they would eat all the food even if it was burnt. Therefore, expert Xu Qiongyue suspected that the mother and daughter's cancer was related to eating grilled meat for a long time, and inhaling and eating carcinogens when grilling meat with recycled waste.

Neighbors living nearby also said that every time this woman's family grilled meat, instead of the smell of grilled meat, it emitted a very unpleasant smell, like the smell of burning tires.

Expert Xu Qiongyue believes that the smell of burning tires can be toxic, so toxic gas will appear every time the woman's family holds a barbecue, and the woman's family barbecues happen very often. Perhaps this is also the main reason why the mother and daughter got cancer.

She also reminds people that if the food is burnt, don't eat it. If you feel it's a waste to throw away the whole piece of meat, at least remove the burnt part. Besides, burning meat also produces air pollutants that can not only stick to clothes and hair but also spread throughout the air for you to inhale and increase the risk of cancer.

Liu Boren, a nutritional medicine doctor, pointed out in a Facebook post that the incidence of cancer is getting younger and younger. He believes that lifestyle and diet changes are needed to reduce the incidence of the disease. Eating more fruits and vegetables, eating less processed foods, exercising moderately, paying attention to possible sources of toxins, getting good sleep, and reducing stress are all factors that reduce the occurrence of cancer.

How to avoid inhaling carcinogens when grilling meat?

The reason you smell the aroma when grilling meat is because the fat from high-fat animal ingredients such as pork belly, beef ribs, sausages, bacon, etc. drips into the charcoal fire at high temperature and melts.

However, these scents can easily contain harmful substances called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can easily increase the risk of cancer if inhaled into the body. They can also cling to food, causing people to accidentally consume them.

Zeng Yufang, a nutritionist at Chi Mei Medical Center in Taiwan (China), suggests that people can use the following three methods when grilling to prevent fat from dripping into the charcoal fire and producing harmful substances:

- Use a grill plate instead of a traditional (charcoal) grill.

- Use an electric grill instead of a charcoal/fire grill.

- Wrap food in foil to prevent food from coming into contact with/dripping grease onto the charcoal fire.
