He went online to ask ChatGPT when he had pain in his private area and was diagnosed with a dangerous surgical emergency, causing him to panic and call for help from the doctor.

On June 29, Dr. Mai Van Luc - Department of Urology and Andrology, Hospital E ( Hanoi ), shared about the case of a 22-year-old man (Hanoi) who came to the clinic in a worried state.

Even though it was not yet his turn, the patient knocked on the clinic door, asking to be examined immediately. He panicked: "Doctor, I'm afraid I have testicular torsion."

The patient said he felt pain in the left scrotum. After searching online and asking ChatGPT, the AI replied that this was a sign of testicular torsion and that emergency treatment was needed to avoid the risk of amputation. A series of dangerous information about this disease made the young man scared.

Because testicular torsion is a male medical emergency, Dr. Luc prioritized examining the patient, even though the clinic was crowded with elderly people.

After a thorough examination and ultrasound, the doctor determined that the patient only had grade II varicocele, which was not as dangerous as the AI diagnosis. The young man was advised to take medication, be monitored, and have regular check-ups.

Dr. Luc recommends that people should not self-diagnose via the Internet or AI tools when their bodies show abnormal signs, especially in sensitive areas. Social networks and AI can provide quick information, but do not guarantee accuracy and cannot replace doctors.

Misdiagnosis can cause confusion or, more dangerously, make patients complacent when the actual condition is serious. Doctors emphasize that people need to go to medical facilities for accurate examination and treatment.

Dr. Luc said the above case is a warning about the use of medical information online. Instead of relying on AI or social networks, patients should seek out a specialist for a timely and correct diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary consequences due to lack of information or misunderstanding of the problem.
