The General Department of Market Management has conducted inspections for each locality to promptly detect and prevent the use of unsafe food for consumption during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The business of food of unknown origin tends to increase during holidays and Tet. Especially, before the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the purchasing power of jams, candies, and moon cakes is high, the risk of smuggled goods, counterfeit goods, goods of unknown origin, poor quality, and goods that do not ensure food safety and hygiene also has many potential complications.
Goods of unknown origin infiltrate
On August 6 and 7, the interdisciplinary inspection team led by Market Management Team No. 3 (Hanoi Market Management Department) inspected two grocery stores in Ba Dinh district and discovered many smuggled confectionery products without invoices or documents proving their origin and not meeting product quality regulations. The authorities seized nearly 600 baked goods without invoices or documents proving their origin, and of unknown product quality.
Not only at grocery stores, authorities also conduct inspections at craft villages to ensure the prevention of violations that affect consumers' health.
Accordingly, on August 13, Market Management Team No. 24 (Hanoi Market Management Department) inspected a confectionery business household at No. 161, La Phu Street, Chua Tong Village, La Phu Commune, Hoai Duc District, Hanoi City and discovered and seized 240 moon cakes (baked cakes, 500g/piece), labeled in foreign words, and 72 packages of sponge cakes, 200g/package, labeled in foreign words.
Identifying large, densely populated markets such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang... as key areas with large purchasing power, market management forces also strengthen measures to inspect and control business establishments to prevent violations.

A representative of the Da Nang City Market Management Department said that the demand for confectionery, especially moon cakes, tends to increase. With professional measures, on August 15, Market Management Team No. 3, Da Nang City Market Management Department discovered and temporarily seized more than 1,800 smuggled moon cakes of various types on Ky Dong Street, Thanh Khe Dong Ward, Thanh Khe District, Da Nang City.
“In addition to reputable production and business establishments and safe products, there are still some organizations and individuals who bring smuggled food and goods of unknown origin to the market, affecting the health of consumers. Therefore, consumers need to be wise in choosing safe products for themselves and their families,” a representative of the Da Nang Market Management Department recommended.
Strengthen market control
It can be seen that the field of food safety is always a hot topic. Every year, the Market Management force alone detects and handles hundreds of violations.
As for moon cakes, the tricks of the traders are also becoming more and more sophisticated. Mr. Vuong Ba Dung, Captain of Market Management Team No. 24 (Hanoi Market Management Department) informed that through actual inspections, the authorities have discovered a number of establishments mixing in other types of goods with documents and stacking them together to deceive the authorities. Moreover, many subjects also use hidden locations, deep in residential areas for easy consumption.
Therefore, the Team has directed market management officers to strengthen their grasp of the area, control the market well to promptly detect signs of violations, to check and handle goods that do not ensure origin, do not have full invoices and documents, and risk affecting quality and the health of consumers.
"Inspection and processing require seriousness and compliance with regulations to help goods reach consumers, ensuring quality and food safety," said Mr. Vuong Ba Dung.

In fact, moon cakes are a seasonal business item, so many small businesses have not focused on investing in facilities or strictly following food safety procedures.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Le, Deputy Director of the Department of Professional Affairs (General Department of Market Management) assessed that, like every year, production activities had started before the 7th lunar month and consumption was mainly before the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.
However, recently, authorities have discovered that some establishments use products and input materials of unknown origin and do not ensure food hygiene and safety. Therefore, the General Department of Market Management regularly urges local units to strengthen inspections.
In particular, the General Department has conducted inspections for each locality to promptly detect and prevent the use of unsafe food products for consumption during the current Mid-Autumn Festival.
Regarding input materials (moon cake filling), according to Mr. Nguyen Duc Le, there are still some establishments using cheap materials as well as the processing process of moon cake ingredients that do not ensure food hygiene and safety, leading to quality that is not guaranteed compared to reputable branded units.
In addition, some consumers want to buy cheap products without paying due attention to their origin, so this is also a loophole for some traders to smuggle cakes of unknown origin into the market, thereby potentially posing a risk of food safety during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Therefore, determining to ensure food safety not only during the Mid-Autumn Festival but throughout the year, the market management force has coordinated with local authorities to strengthen inspections, if violations are detected, they will be strictly handled; combined with businesses, associations, industries, and local authorities to step up propaganda and mobilize people to consume smartly, only buy quality products with clear origins that have been certified.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Le also recommends that when buying cakes, jams and candies, especially on e-commerce, consumers need to pay close attention to the origin, especially the comments and reviews of buyers on those products.
“The General Department of Market Management has directly directed the Market Management Departments to strengthen inspections, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, two localities with large consumption. The General Department's leaders will have a specific plan and direct their subordinate teams to conduct inspections of major brands that use imported materials. If violations are detected, they will be strictly handled according to the provisions of the law,” said Mr. Nguyen Duc Le./.
