Reuters quoted the Crown Prosecution Service as saying that two men, aged 32 and 29, were charged with espionage on April 22 with providing information harmful to China, in breach of the Official Secrets Act. The two defendants will appear in court next week.

Dominic Murphy, head of counter-terrorism at the Metropolitan Police in London, said it was an "extremely complex investigation into very serious allegations".
Last year, a British parliamentary researcher was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. The British government at the time believed that Chinese spies were targeting officials in sensitive positions in British politics , defense and business to gain access to confidential information.
Also on April 22, German investigators arrested three Germans suspected of spying for Beijing. These three people, Herwig F., Ina F. and Thomas R., are suspected of working for a Chinese agent before June 2022.
Mr. Thomas R. is suspected of working for an employee of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, possessing information in Germany about technologies that could be used for military purposes. He established a relationship with the couple Herwig and Ina, who run a company in Duesseldorf, to access technologies and build relationships with the German scientific and research community.
The company signed an agreement with a German university for “knowledge transfer.” Under the agreement, the suspects would prepare a study on the most advanced machinery components for marine engines. They were also negotiating research projects that could be useful for expanding China’s naval combat capabilities.
The trio were also accused of representing China's Ministry of State Security in purchasing a special laser device from Germany for export to China without permission.
China has not commented on the incidents in the UK and Germany.
