After 12 years of competing with thousands of medals and championship cups in large and small dancesport competitions, recently, twins Gia Bao and Gia Linh were both awarded the title of national masters by the Vietnam Gymnastics Federation.
Eight years ago, Hoang Gia Bao and Hoang Gia Linh (born in 2006, Hanoi) became known to many people when they entered the top 4 of Vietnam's Got Talent. The twins then "fought" together in many domestic and international arenas. During 12 years of competition, Gia Bao and Gia Linh won more than 1,000 medals and 200 championship cups in dancesport competitions. Most recently, in October 2023, the two brothers won the National Dancesport Championship and were awarded national masters at the end of December. "To achieve such results, both brothers had to practice hard for many years. However, we always think that it is still a journey, not a destination. The two brothers' higher goal is to reach out to the world," said Gia Linh.
Gia Bao is currently studying at Marie Curie School, while Gia Linh is studying at the High School for the Gifted in Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi National University). Both brothers were introduced to dancesport by their mother when they were 5 years old. At that time, Gia Bao suffered from bronchial spasms and was often tired, while Gia Linh was engrossed in TV and phones. Therefore, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Huyen decided to let her two children try singing, martial arts, dancing, etc. at Cau Giay Cultural House to improve their health. While studying dancesports, the teacher discovered that Linh and Bao had the ability for this subject. Therefore, she met with their mother privately and suggested that the two brothers pursue dancesport professionally. “At that time, the teacher praised the children for their talent and good musical sense, and that if they combined to form a dancing couple, they would have a lot of potential. Because the children were also interested, the family decided to let them try, but the parents did not have high expectations. But unexpectedly, thanks to the dance practice, Gia Bao also recovered from bronchial spasms without realizing it,” said Ms. Huyen. Since then, the two brothers have accompanied each other in the training process. The two quickly became a “prodigy” couple who achieved many successes in tournaments. In grade 1, for the first time participating in the National Youth Championship in Quang Ninh, the two brothers “won” Gold and Bronze Medals in 4 events. The two also participated in the King's Cup in Thailand for 4 consecutive years and won in 2017 and 2018. This was also the period when the two brothers participated in the most tournaments, about a dozen large and small tournaments each year.
After 12 years of practicing dancesport, Gia Linh said that it is very normal to have dislocations, sprains, and limbs hitting the floor while practicing. Besides that problem, the most difficult thing is still arranging time to balance between studying in class and practicing. Gia Bao said, there are days when both of them come home at 11 pm, then continue to sit at the table to complete homework. Because she studies at a specialized school, Gia Linh is sometimes busier than her brother. Many days, Linh has to stay up until 1-2 am to finish her homework, wake up the next morning to go to school, then go dancing as usual. Currently, both of them are in grade 12, and do not have as much time to practice as before. However, the two brothers still try to arrange about 2-3 sessions a week to practice on their own and 2 sessions with teachers at the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports. With such a routine, Linh said that the two brothers still have to practice every day to improve their techniques, because both of them "have not yet reached perfection". "The luckiest thing is that my dance partner is my brother, so we understand each other very well. For example, in the couple competitions, we have some advantages, such as one person only needs to give a signal and the other person knows what to do next," Linh said. Another lucky thing is that in big and small competitions, including competitions in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong or China, both brothers have their mother accompanying them. "Although my mother does not know the technical issues in this field by heart, she is very thoughtful in taking care of us in terms of clothes, hair, meals, and sleep. With our mother accompanying us, we do not have to worry about anything," the two brothers shared.
Ms. Thanh Huyen said that Gia Linh and Gia Bao were born into a family where no one was in the arts or had any talent for sports. At first, she and her husband wanted their children to learn dancing to improve their health and enrich their lives, but now this subject has become their energy and their lives. “The children are so passionate that when they got bad grades and their mother said she would stop dancing, they were all very scared and promised to balance both things well. I always guide my children towards what they want and do not put pressure on them about their achievements or having to make money from this subject,” Ms. Huyen said.
Despite being busy with practice, Gia Bao and Gia Linh have still achieved the title of excellent students at school for many years. In the last school year, Gia Linh achieved a total score of 9.4/10, in the top 7 of the class. Linh's goal is to pass the entrance exam to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and consider dancing as a passion. Meanwhile, Gia Bao still aims to pursue this sport long-term and can become a professional international coach or referee. Currently, in addition to being a professional athlete under the management of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, Gia Bao also teaches at an art center. Bao's wish is to pass on to young children more knowledge and love for dancesport.
