The global tech world is focusing its attention on the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June. However, just before the event, the Cupertino giant made a strategic move by unexpectedly updating the entire pricing structure of its Apple Trade-in program in the US market.

Apple's trade-in price list has unexpectedly changed.

According to MacRumors , Apple has significantly raised the pricing for most of its iPhone 16, iPad, and Mac models, offering consumers a profitable upgrade opportunity.

In this price update, the current iPhone 16 lineup saw the most significant increase. Apple raised the trade-in ceiling for the flagship iPhone 16 Pro Max from $685 to $695. Notably, the standard iPhone 16 saw the most impressive jump, increasing by $25, pushing its trade-in value from $435 to $460. The remaining models, such as the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Plus, also saw a uniform increase of $10.

Not just phones, the iPad tablet segment also received good news as the buyback prices for all models simultaneously increased. Specifically, the top-of-the-line iPad Pro recorded a new valuation of up to $690 (previously $670). The iPad Air, iPad mini, and standard iPad models also saw an increase of $15 to $20 per device brought to Apple Stores.

The harsh differentiation in the Mac segment and the 'undermining' of Android.

In contrast to the soaring prices of iPhones and iPads, the Mac computer and Apple Watch product lines have seen a stark contrast. While mass-market models like the MacBook Air (which increased from $485 to $520) and the Mac mini and Mac Studio have seen significant price increases, Apple has drastically lowered the prices of its high-performance business laptops. A prime example is the top-of-the-line Mac Pro, which saw its trade-in value plummet from $2,090 to just $2,045.

For the Apple Watch product line, the Ultra 2 saw a $10 price increase (to $305), while the original Apple Watch Ultra lost $10 in value.

In particular, in an effort to entice users away from its competitors' ecosystems, Apple has also revamped the pricing structure for Android devices. However, instead of raising prices to stimulate demand, Apple unexpectedly lowered the maximum price point for Android devices from $370 to $360.

Analysts believe that Apple's continuous adjustment of the trade-in value for old devices is a strategy to retain existing customers and pave the way for upcoming new hardware product lines. By directly subsidizing users' wallets through a trade-in program, Apple not only increases sales but also solidifies customer loyalty amidst increasingly fierce competition in the mobile market.
