Apple cannot yet produce M5 chip using 2nm process

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/12/2024

Recent reports have suggested that Apple is taking up 2nm chip supply from TSMC, but the M5 chip will still be manufactured on the same 3nm process as its predecessor, the M4. This decision is believed to be due to the fact that the 2nm chip manufacturing process is still too expensive even for Apple, a company known for its products that are more expensive than its competitors.

Without the M5 chip, the iPad is still not inferior in performance.

Is the M5 better than the M4?

While it's still using a 3nm process, that doesn't mean the M5 chip won't have any improvements over the M4. However, the M5 could see even better improvements if Apple decides to go with a 2nm manufacturing process.

The M5 is expected to power new iPad models due later this year, as well as new MacBook Pro models. Some sources also say that the successor to the Vision Pro will use the M5 chip, although this has yet to be confirmed. Whether it is a 3nm chip or not, the M5 is likely to continue the trend of small improvements each year and will not be able to bring about a breakthrough like when Apple switched from Intel chips to Apple Silicon.

It's important to note that modern chip specifications don't always reflect what they actually deliver. A 3nm chip doesn't necessarily mean that its internal components are actually 3nm apart. These specifications are often used as marketing gimmicks to make it easier for people to understand the differences between processors.
