Today, exactly one week after the official release of the iOS 18.0.1 update, Apple has stopped signing iOS 18.0. This means that users will no longer be able to downgrade to an older version of iOS.
Apple releases iOS 18.0.1.
iOS 18: Big improvements and quick fixes
Apple released iOS 18 on September 16 with a host of new features for the iPhone. The update brings more powerful customization tools, a redesigned Photos app, and major upgrades to other apps like Messages and Notes.
However, users soon reported a number of issues, especially on the latest iPhone models. To address the issue, Apple quickly released the iOS 18.0.1 update on October 3, bringing fixes for common issues.
Bugs fixed in iOS 18.0.1
The iOS 18.0.1 update includes fixes for the following issues:
- The touchscreen on some iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models may become temporarily unresponsive in certain situations.
- Camera may freeze when recording video in macro mode with ultra wide angle camera, 4K resolution, and HDR off on iPhone 16 Pro.
- Messages may suddenly stop working when replying to a message from a shared Apple Watch face.
- System performance may be affected due to memory allocation issues on some iPhone models.
- Apple stops supporting downgrades after iOS 18.0.1 update
As usual, after an update has been released for a week, Apple decides to stop signing the older version – this time iOS 18.0. This makes it impossible for users to go back to the previous version after upgrading to iOS 18.0.1.
Apple’s decision to end support for downgrades isn’t new. The company typically says that a week is enough time for users to downgrade if they’re having problems, and that fixes in a new update should help keep their devices running smoothly.
If you are running iOS 18.0.1 and are happy with it, there is no need to worry about this issue. However, if you are running iOS 18.0, please note that after upgrading to iOS 18.0.1, you will not be able to go back to the previous version.
